Moog Prodigy Oscillator 1 Fault

Hi, I hope someone can give me some pointers before starting to fault trace.

I turned on my Moog Prodigy yesterday for the first time in a long while. No tone to be heard from Oscillator 1, just a crack type sound instead of the wave tone. The short crackling sound does change pitch and you can hear it being affected by other knobs etc. Oscillator 2 works fine and the difference is night and day.

Has anybody experienced fault finding this type of problem on a Prodigy before?

Is there a known specific component that fails causing this, or could it be dry joints?

Any pointers would be appreciated as I’d like to fix this as soon as possible.

For point of reference, myself and my father have decades of detailed electronic repair experience.

Thanks in advance for any help.

And having turned it on ten minutes ago and then tried it, all is working as it should now!

Good luck.

However with “decades of detailed electronic repair experience”, you yourself should know this problem will likely reoccur.

Again, good luck.

The reason I mentioned the amount of experience is that there was another guy asking for help with his Prodigy fault and the only replies were mostly about getting someone experienced with electronics.

My dad is a retired electronics technician who has DECADES OF EXPERIENCE. And yes he has repaired other of my old synths over the years. I’ve also done my fair share over the past 30 years.

As it stands it appears the synth simply needed to be left for a while to acclimatise to room temperature as it was in storage for years. And I was too quick to post a message asking if anyone had experience the same problem and where to get a pointer to start fault tracing.

I understand, but adjusting to room temperature shouldn’t be the break point between a functioning synth and one that’s crackling.
I too have decades of experience in electronics (36 years), but mostly in repairing synths.
I’ve never seen a synth actually fix itself because it got a few degrees warmer.
It may well have started working once warmed up, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fixed, simply that an intermittent connection made contact.

I DO wish you good luck.
