Moog One Inside out masterclass

I just watched the #6 Effects video and learned something I didn’t really understand before. Thanks for pointing out the difference between the “mix” on Synth effects and Master effects. I had to try it out to understand how mix works differently on Synth and Master effects.

I experimented and thought that for Synth effects a 50% mix would give equal levels to the wet and dry signals, but at 50% it seemed like the wet was just a little louder. After listening to a delay Synth effect with level at 100% I had to turn the mix to 40% to get equal sounding levels. But as you pointed out, with mix at 100% you get NO dry signal.

And for Master effects, with mix at 100% you get equal parts of wet/dry signal.

Thanks for pointing this out…

thank you for the feedback.

Yes, they work this way and on the manual it is not deeply explained. And bear also in mind that with the effect level 100, the signal becomes too hot. I would like if you will try the external in, to check it is very low on your Moog one too.

By the way, I am preparing a new sound bank for the Moog One, and I was able to replicate a famous sound for the Moog Muse, designed by Lisa Belladonna, that is called Soft Orchestra. I think I nailed it

I’m looking forward to the new sound bank!

Concerning the external inputs, there are two External Inputs on the rear panel:

  • Mic/Line: Neutrik (XLR/TRS/TS combo) with a Trim knob to adjust the input gain
  • Line: TRS/TS with no Trim knob

I connected a Mic (through a mic preamp) to the Mic/Line rear panel on the Moog. The Trim knob didn’t seem to do much.

In the Mixer More page I routed the Mic/Line to the Ladder filter with the Input Level at 100%. I enabled Hold (so I didn’t have to keep the keys pressed) and opened the gate for one note. The level at the Main outputs was very low. I played two notes and noticed the level increase a bit. So I played about 24 notes and the level increased to an acceptable level. I can’t explain this behavior, maybe somebody else can explain what’s happening.

Sergio - You mentioned the Vocoder in your Video, so I tried it out for the first time today. It seems that the Mic/Line external input is “hardcoded” to the Vocoder Synth Effect. When I add the 10 band or 16 band vocoder on any synth, the Output More page shows VOCODER all across the row for Insert 3. When I take the vocoder synth effect off the synth, the Output More page Insert 3 row goes back to what it was before.

With the mic connected to the Mic/Line input, the Vocoder seems to work without any routing in the Mixer More page. I play a note, nothing comes out until I speak into the mic. I also noticed that the output level is higher with Unison enabled. So for me, the Mic/Line external input seems to work fine with the vocoder synth effect.

I just finished video #7 sound management and settings.

I didn’t realize it was possible to “solo” a synth. After seeing this in the video I looked closer at the manual, and yes it’s there. Sometimes we just need to be reminded…

And then I saw you create a snapshot and then quickly move to another preset without saving the preset. I had to try this myself, and found that you don’t need to save the preset to maintain the history of snapshots. It seems that they persist until deleted…

yes, of course you have to speak and take a chord and you will hear your voice with the harmony of the chord or whatever you play. I have to check better. But anyway, from what I read on another message you posted, the inputs are very low on your synth too. No matter which input you are using, And yes, also for me the trim it seems to do pretty nothing. what makes me upset, is that Moog is not replying at all for all these questions, and they abandoned this synth that should be their flagship, no matter that is not available anymore. They should fix many things.

yes, the snapshots will be always available, until you will not delete them. They are very very useful, as also the compare switch, that is often under evaluated
