I’d like to know the details about voice assignment modes on the One. On almost all poly synths, if you set up a lead sound with a long release time, it isn’t usable in poly mode since it just sounds like a piano with the sustain pedal held down. The only synths I know of that address this are the Oberheim SEM-based 4/8-voice and the Yamaha CS 50/60/80. It’s been a long time since I played the Oberheims, but on the Yamahas there’s the Sustain I and II modes. Sustain I is like most poly synths but in Sustain II mode, hitting a new key when no keys are currently pressed cancels all the currently sounding notes. Well, technically it’s more complicated and is actually doing a sort-of unison mode because of how the keyboard scanning chip works, but the effect is basically the same. This is a super useful feature. The Oberheim’s reset/rotate/etc assignment modes can also be useful for combining chord and single-note playing and knowing where notes will glide from and to with portamento on.
So, what does the One do by default and does it have options? I see the One’s Mono and Unison buttons and Detune knob. How do these work? If I’m in Unison, is there a menu option to determine number of voices triggered? Is there dynamic unison so playing one note triggers all 8 (assuming 8-voice) voices but playing a 4-note chord triggers 2 voices for each key? If I’m in unison, can I choose last/low/high assign like the Mini re-issue? Can I choose legato/re-trigger for envelopes and legato-only portamento so I can use the One as a mono synth?
Finally, from Amos’ videos yesterday, he was answering a question about poly aftertouch. It sounded like he was saying that the One could, in theory, respond to it via MIDI but it’s not implemented yet. Is that right? Is it planned for an upcoming firmware release? What about MPE?

So from Amos’s 4:10 video today it sounds like there will be firmware or O/S patches come out later that are now under development, can you tell us what’s the concept behind the ETH01 port? And what is under the covers for Firmware / O/S? JUCE?

I found the video where PolyAT is mentioned, it is toward the end (around 1:06:40) of the “Deep Dive Part 2” video- Amos clearly states that MIDI response to PolyAT is “in the plans,” but it seems that it hasn’t been implemented yet.

For right now, the best thing to say is that there is PLENTY of memory left for updates, feature requests, optimization, etc.
Everyone I know, associated with this project, is determined to provide One with the most desirable set of features ever offered.
Anything promised by Moog will very likely happen in the near, rather than distant, future.

I’ve got a couple of questions about tuning stability.
In some parts of some videos, mostly by Amos, I’ve noticed a couple of times that some notes were badly out of tune. He did his best to quickly stop playing them move on to explain something else, but it was noticeable.
Question One (
): On a synth with 48 oscillators (16 voices X 3), how stable will be the analog oscillators and will it require to call an auto-tune routine from time to time, or is it continuously running in the background ?

Please provide voice number (contiguous values per timbre 1 through 16 (or
) as a modulation source. It serves as a way to vary a parameter per voice.
One of the reasons why old Oberheims are so desirable is that the circuits aren’t perfect. When you modulate the VCF with the EG, the depth of modulation is not the same across the voicecards. Due to tolerance differences on the timing caps of the EGs, the A/D/R transients can also vary across each voicecard. But imperfections can be a feature, as the VCF cutoff of each voice sounds a little different.
This is also the key to the “Tom Sawyer” rez sweep. Put it in unison, crank the EG Amount on the VCF, and that “grinding” sound is non-matched VCF cutoffs sweeping down.
Every polysynth since the old Oberheims can’t do this because they are “too perfect”.
The proper way to program that Tom Sawyer intro sound (done on Geddy Lee’s custom Oberheim 8 voice SEM synth I believe) is to turn off keyboard pitch control of the oscillators and tune them to a low E, and turn on 100% keyboard tracking for the filter cutoff, have the filter envelope sweep down the cutoff, crank the resonance up to max, and play a minor E chord on the keyboard.
Which brings another question about the Moog One: can the keyboard tracking be turned-off for the oscillators ?
As we install various versions of firmware (super easy to do) we get various quirks that each need to be hammered flat.
There will normally be no need to auto tune, either manually or automatically.
When I have a version installed that has the oscillators correctly calibrated, it has a perfectly analog sense of motion that sounds powerful and in tune.
All of these kinds of things will be perfect when it’s released.
Yep. When you power on you can hear it at full blast. It then quickly slows down to a very quiet speed.
The fan speed (like everything else on One) will be optimized for the best performance.
Keyboard Tracking can be used to modulate every MOD Destination from -300.00% to +300.00%.
(Using SHIFT will allow you to edit the two decimal places.)
You can even choose the Key Tracking Center Key (per each of the three Synths).
That’s another way to simulate the “imperfections”. But how do you play E-A-G notes with the keyboard pitch control to the VCOs turned off?
Will there be an easter egg “light show” like the Memorymoog has? Press C-0-Enter and every LED flashes like a theater marquee. When the band took a break I would turn the light show on and people noticed it.
Here’s one I really like on my Kurzweil 1000 romplers and is rarely implemented: soft pedal.
The way Kurzweil implemented it is to treat soft pedal as a continuous controller and map it to volume attenuation from 0dB to 6dB (or user defined). But the change in volume doesn’t happen until the NEXT voices are triggered - so previously held voices do not jump in volume.
I prefer soft pedal to control rhythm/solo volume over CC#7 volume pedal controller. When using my MIDI controller, I’ll assign a button to soft pedal and configure the on/off values for rhythm/solo volumes.
Can you plug in a USB keyboard for typing in patch names?
Watch the Amos videos. I’m sure I heard him mention that, YES, you can use a USB computer keyboard. (thank goodness!)

The oscillators all play a single low E note, but the chord played on the keyboard is only used to offset the filter cutoff of each voice. That’s what makes the peculiar sound heard on Tom Sawyer.

I think I saw a pic from the live build that looked like it had 5 cooling fans inside it.
Are these audible when the synth is powered on and in use?
Do they come on and off dependant on internal temperature, or are they ‘always on’.
