Hey guys !
What u think is the better option, buy a Minitaur and a Slim Phatty or buy just the new Sub 37 ? ![]()
I’m right there with you. I sold my LP to a band member to get a slimP, and I didn’t know about the Sub or Sub37!
I’m not a keys player. I want one for ambient stuff, drones, and some kinda taurus footpedal stuff.
I have a midi footpedal set I haven’t tried out, and wanted to get a nice 25 key for hand use/studio…
Miss my phatty, but being a bass player I already have too much gear and it never fit onstage with the tiny corners I get stuck in.
Kinda stuck… Lottery rules I’d two or three of EACH. ![]()

They all have their own unique qualities & sounds, so it might come down to your space available, keyboard needs, budget, etc.
If you already have a good MIDI controller, or will primarily plan on computer-based sequencing, a Slim Phatty (or two!) along with a Minitaur can make for a pretty nice duo. They CAN sound similar, if needed, but individually are also capable of some very unique sounds.
On the other hand, if you need a keyboard, the Sub37 might be the best way to go, just keep in mind that you’ll be limiting yourself to a single paraphonic instrument - two separate pitches, but routing through a single filter and EG. However, by all accounts it still makes for one kick-ass Moog synth!!
You should be able to download all the manuals off the Moog web site -
perusing those, and listening to the demo sounds on the web site, might help you in your decision process
Good luck with your decision - welcome to the addiction! ![]()
After seeing and hearing a number of videos of the Sub 37, I sold my custom Little Phatty, and preordered the Sub 37. Just got a call from my sales rep at Sweetwater saying the Sub 37 will start shipping in the middle of May. If I had a dedicated MIDI controller, I might have opted for a couple Slims for true duophony, but I prefer self-contained synths, and more knobs is always a good thing.
My thoughts: If you only have room for one keyboard, maybe you play in a band and don’t want to drag a giant complicated rig around or you multitrack recordings at home, then the Sub37 will be best, and most fun, I’m sure.
But if you like to play a right hand/left hand arrangement, like foot pedals like a Taurus III but with other pedals, or have hopes of multiple voices (like 2 or 3 Slim Phatty’s someday), then go for that combo.
For one, you can get secondhand Minitaur and Slim’s for far less than a Sub37… second, if you ever sell, you likely won’t lose much if anything. Lots of bling in the Sub37 but lots of usefulness in the slightly older Moog gear. Watch Jordan Rudess play the bejesus out of the Little Phatty in the series of 9 tutorial videos (along with a delay) and be amazed… It’s often not about the features, but about being inspired and there is ‘more’ there to inspire (if you are a musician vs. a technician) in having the two… (in my humble opinion) …
(assuming you already have a decent controller that will do splits and maybe offer mappable aftertouch?.. if you don’t contact me and I’ll sell you my M-Audio AxiomPro 49
)

Still I’m with Voltor on that one. Cult of the object at a time where everything is going unmaterialized, I guess. And aestethics!
