Minitaur for Live Performance?

This instrument sounds fantastic in the videos. And I see that when connected to a computer you can actually save and recall its presets. But I’m wondering if during a live performance, without a computer, how difficult it would be to quickly dial in all of the different sounds that you would need to perform all of your songs in a set. Or is this instrument better suited for studio use?

It depends. Take a computer on-stage, have the Minitaur right there, you have presets. Leave the computer at home, and things get tricky. If there’s 30 seconds between songs, that should be plenty of time for a seasoned analog pro to switch patches.

I play live using 2 slim phatties without any presets. Everything is tweaked in realtime.
Takes a lot of focus…

That must sound heavenly… Would you consider yourself a “seasoned analog Pro” or other such term of experience?

I usually don’t switch patches via the menu when I’m gigging with my LP. I just use one patch and continuously tweak that one all night.

If you use a midi sequencer you can store patches as a string of CCs.

I’m a musician who has performed with a modular as well as a KORG PS-3100.
I regularly perform with a MInimoog and/or an ARP 2600.
A Minitaur presents a tiny amount of knobs. If it presents a challenge to you, you should take your music to the next step and learn how synthesis works. I promise it’ll be worth it!

How long have you been playing synths?

Yes, I agree. I’m a guitar player looking to purchase my first synth. While I’ve done a fair amount of reading it has all been at a beginners level. I believe that I need some hands on learning to help me understand more. While the knobs of the Minitaur appear to be well laid out, I still don’t really understand all of their functions, how they affect the sound, and how they interact with each other. I must admit that I’m anxious about spending money on a synth that might be too difficult for me to quickly and accurately switch between different sounds during a live performance any time soon. I figured that a synth with presets would be sort of like having training wheels if that makes sense…but she is a beauty!

I use mine with no computer. We only get to play out for an hour at a time, so I’m only using like three settings. Easy Peasy once I memorized them.

One thing with the Minitaur is it’s oscillators are limited to as high as C72. So, strictly bass use with it. May want to look into a Slim Phatty. Has preset memory, along with full range on the oscillators. Saw one on eBay for BIN of $599.
