Midi Murf with Phatty - sync

Hi guys. I’ve recently got my MMurf and I’m really pleased, as now sync seems a bit easier to achieve (in DAW).
I wondering however if there’s a way to sync my Phatty and a Murf.

For example I’d like to play an arpeggio and I’d like the arpeggio to be filtered in time. In other words - arp tempo goes down, murf’s tempo goes down as well or vice versa (staying in sync of course). Any ideas how to achieve this? Is it even possible?

Any other fun applications regarding those two units?

I’m trying to figure out how to make most out of linking those two.

Thanks!

If the LP sends out the required midi messages, then you would just need a midi cable between the two.

Many ways to deal with this, none of them trivial, all of them rewarding!

  1. if you have CV out on your Phatty, you can use the Vol envelope or Filter env CV out plugged into your STEP input on the Murf to step the pattern each time a note plays via Arp. In theory, this SHOULD work using the GATE OUT 1/4" on the right panel bank of connections but for whatever reason, the ARP doesn’t release the notes with enough time for the Murf to sense that a subsequent GATE has occured.

  2. If you have a Sequencer, you can play a sequence of notes to the Phatty interleaved with a NoteOn #108 (as described on pg. 20 of the MurF manual) to STEP the pattern.

  3. The easiest way is to use an inexpensive drum machine or metronome that offers Midi Clock out, set the proper channel on the MurF and set your Phatty to listen to Midi clock for ARP (or if you really want to get fancy, to LFO also).

  4. Feel the “power of the pedal” with an MP-201. I use it to drive my Midi clock whilst pulsing LFOs on other Analog gear. You can do this with tap tempo or with the expression pedal, etc.

Otherwise, there are some interesting things you can do with Midi and the MurF and Phatty, for instance mess with the various modes such as Mute, Triggered, Sustain, but obviously, you will only be playing the notes that you are holding on the Phatty so best to play another device through it.

The Phatty is a polyphonic Midi device which is simply to say that you can play chords or hold multiple notes down so I suppose it’s possible to play some of the notes assigned to specific functions as described on pg. 21-22 whilst playing black keys or upper/lower ranges depending on settings of your Octave buttons on the Phatty.

Ultimately, you’ll want a cheap-o keyboard like an M-Audio midi keyboard to mess with the Filter settings via Midi while playing you Phatty. Add a simple drum machine to that and you are all set.

Hope this info is helpful.

Thanks for the great answer, Mike!

so there’s no out of the box solution

I don’t have CV outs in my LP, but I’ve got my trusty ol’ MP-201 so I think I’ll give it a try.

and once again - thanks for your reply!

Well in that case, you’ll just need a channel setup as LFO, sending Midi Only. And sync’ed to internal Midi clock. If you have any issues with it, let me know via PM and I’ll respond with the actual settings. It’s a bit tricky, this MP but once you master it you won’t be able to live without it.

Also, see this thread for important additional information pertaining to clock sync’ing: http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7532

Does the LP send out MIDI notes as the arp is playing, or does it just send out the notes that you are pressing?

The LP sends out MIDI notes as the arp is playing. It does not, if I recall correctly, send MIDI Clock at the Arp rate… although I suppose this is not out of the question as a feature to add to the LP later.
