MIDI Cables, 3 pins wired vs. 5 pins wired?

I bought a new MIDI cable today. It’s to go from my M-Audio Oxygen 61 to my new Dave Smith Instruments Tetra. I thought all MIDI cables were the same? I ended up getting 5 pins wired. It seems to work, but I don’t know anything about this. For all I know not all information is being sent and the sound is different. I wouldn’t even know.

So if anyone knows, What is the difference between 3 pins wired and 5 pins wired?

Midi only needs three pins to operate and one is a ground.

If you got a 5 pin cable, then you can use it between Din Sync gear as well. The extra 2 pins allow the clock pulses and the start/stop signal to be used.
