hi ppl
i recently acquired an mf101 with ep2, absolutely LOVING it!! ![]()
i play bass and its hands down the greatest pedal ive ever played through!!
i use the ep2 in the cutoff but was wondering if you could connect (via trs cable) the envelope out to one of the other expression pedal inputs…??? im not exactly sure what this would achieve
its just my curiosity is getting the better of me and i didnt want to try it out before checking it out with some more experienced users than i..
any hints/thoughts/tips would be greatly appreciated ![]()
Yeah, that is a viable CV out option for the 101.
What makes the Foogers so great are the CV outs, so within the Fooger there are a few modules. Normally hardwired together, the signals can be exported to another device. So its taking the envelope follower module and applying that voltage to the pitch of your synth, or the mix amount of your ring mod, or the sweep knob of your phaser or the feedback of the delay…all modulated by the strength of your input signal.
Id reccomend that you get the MoogerFooger training DVD to whet your whistle for more Foogers. If you live in a place where Moogs aren’t in any music store within 200 miles like I do, then you will get to know a little about what those do and sound like. I think that you can find a lot of videos on youtube, and I think that Moog is even putting those instructional DVD’s on youtube.
You might want to keep in mind that non Moog pedals with expression pedal inputs might not be suitable for thie CV out, so check the manual for the approproate voltage range of your other pedals.

thanks for the reply.. i actually meant routing the envelope out back into the mf101 itself…?
say for example: taking the env out into the res, setting the res quite low so you control the res by dynamics.. would this harm the unit in any way??
No–it will not harm the unit. Moogerfooger CV inputs are designed to accept Moogerfooger CV outputs; even plugging a CV output back into a CV input on the same unit. You can also plug the CV output into the Audio input of the MF 101…but be careful of your ears–it can make some hellishly loud noises if you’re not careful (dial back the drive to 0 and set your amp to zero…increase the volume very slowly when dialing up a patch like this).
The MF 101 is a great sounding filter. Patching its CV envelope output into any of its CV inputs expands the sounds it can produce in a few ways. But to get dramaticly different sounds that really showcase how the MF 101s capabilities, look to getting a CP 251 control processor or a MP 201. With additional CV inputs (e.g., LFOs + Sample + Hold voltages, etc.) and an expression pedal, you can realize a whole lot more value from the MF 101.
thanks for the advice! much appreciated!!
hmmmmmm now im looking at that CP 251… interesting!! baffling but very interesting ![]()
Fishing around for good demos of the CP 251 in action on Youtube dosn’t yield many videos…But in virtually any video that highlights the particularly exotic sounds that Moogerfoogers are capable of, there is a control processor somewhere in the setup.
The one way to imagine how the CP251 would work with your MF 101 (or any Moog pedal) is to think of four hands on all four of the knobs of the 101 constantly tweaking parameters as you play.
Some of my favorite patches using this set up include using a triangle LFO shape to constantly sweep the frequency (or envelope) setting on the MF 101…this produces a sound that is kind of phaser/auto wah-ish. You can also use a square wave to get a much harsher harder sound as the low pass filter jumps from high to low frequencies rapidly (it dosn’t sweep the frequencies smoothly.
You can also reverse the envelope sweep effect to go from high to low instead of from low to high.
Seriously–there are many sounds that the MF 101 can produce with the CP 251.
what can i say…? im totally sold on the idea now!! i think the cp251 will be my next purchase, i had a mooch around on youtube and found a couple of video demos of the cp251 in conjunction with the mf101, which gave me a bit more of an idea also… amazing, i knew this mf101 was a versatile little beast but really had no idea
!!! i have barely scraped the very tip of the iceberg!!!
BIG thanks to you for the advice!! im SO glad i joined this forum!!

Here’s a track I recorded with the CP-251 controlling the MF-101:
Bass → Z Vex Woolly Mammoth fuzz → MF-101 → Alembic F-2B preamp → board
Since I was playing bass pedals, I used the CP-251 to control the filter cutoff. The very first part is sample-and-hold, then you hear it switched to “smoothed-out” sample-and-hold. I had an expression pedal plugged into the CP-251 to control the sample-and-hold speed, so you hear the filter cutoff speed up near the end. I probably also used one of the attenuators to control the distance of the sweep - too much, and it sweeps down into sub-frequency!

great stuff m8!! i actually downloaded and was subsequently listening to that track around 3am this morning!! that woolly mammoth adds a great fuzz! i recently sold my malekko assmaster to make way for an Iron Ether Oxide Fuzz, which does the mammoth style gated fuzz as well as brassmaster/assmaster stylee ![]()
you`ve gave me even more reason to get the cp251 !! (not that i needed any more reasons
)
inspiring m8!!
Heres a youtuve vid that did using a cp251, but no 101. I took as many lfo’s as I could and combined them to the frequency of the Freqbox.
Having a 107/cp251 is very similar to having a self contained synth (minus a filter and vca of corse) because its essentially a sound source with a modularion buss. If you are limited to how many tracks you can record, it makes a good alternate voice through a Voyager or another synth.
