MF101 and MF102, good combo?

Hey guys,

I’m a guitar player. I use the 102 mostly as a tremolo effect, it sounds very cool. Im thinking of getting the LowPassFilter. I like having something like an autowah/filter thingie. I really like the envelope follower, it’s great that the effect follows your playing, following your dynamics.

I was thinking, the envelope follower control’s the LFO right? Is it possible to patch this to the 102, so i can get something like an envelope controlled tremolo?

Does anyone use the combo (101/102). How do you guys use it, any cool patch idea’s?

Yes, you can do exactly that. You can have it control any of the functions on the ring modulator that have CV inputs. For tremolo effects it will be the most noticeable controlling either the mix or the carrier frequency.

One caveat that you probably already know about: The mix knob works somewhat differently than I originally expected it to. It isn’t like a “depth” control on a typical tremolo pedal, as the mix also effects the perceived speed and shape of the tremolo. Consequently, as the envelope dies down the tremolo effect doesn’t just get weaker, it also changes character. It is a cool effect, just not what I had anticipated.

Using the envelope to control the carrier frequency gives tremolo effects that get faster the harder you play and slow down as the note decays. It is a great sound.

Those are the two pedals I have, though I also have the CP251, which would greatly add to the sounds that you can get from the pedals.

Don’t forget that you can use the LFO on the ring modulator to control parameters on the low pass filter. Varying resonance, filter cutoff, mix, or attack amount can give some dynamic sounds.
