mf 104z delay path

hey’all

i would like to know if anybody here could help me with my 104z (serial #0288)
i noticed that the delayed sounds are a little “dull” (as opposed to “bright”) and it seems the delay time doesn’t change the “bandwidth” of the signal like it does for the electro-harmonix deluxe memory man. so i was wondering if the delay-path was low-pass filtered or if my unit has a problem and needs repair!
sorry i can’t provide any sound clips cause i don’t have anything to record right now

regards
cheers

Hey Frances, welcome on the forum.

I use the MF-104Z and some EHX, namely DMM with Tap Tempo and DM Boy. The DMMTT is much brighter than the MF, indeed. Actually, it’s the Moog that is darker than many other BBD delays including EHX ones, Diamond Memory Lane, etc. This is the normal behaviour, and yours is not broken I guess.

FWIW, I got a bit disapointed when I got mine, at first, because I was looking for something more savage. The EHX certainly is, but the MF has this natural sounding that makes it very sweet.

hi stiiiiiiive!

thanks for answering!
so i guess my unit is alright, i feel releaved!!
would you by any chance know if this can be tweaked or changed easily?
and, one other thing. i read that the MF 104Z had a daughter board attached to the mother board, on which are the BBD chips (only 2 on the mother board), and that there were 2 empty sockets allowing somebody to put 2 extra BBD chips (mn 3008 i believe) in there. can this be done easily or does it require fancy tuning regarding clock-noise and other things?

I remember asking Moog techs whether brightening the delay was possible. They told me it was not. However the feedback knob can be more sentitive. I can send you the process if you are interested.

About the possible mod of the BBD card, I know there is topic dealing with that out there. I don’t know much more. I’ml sure you can find it, it’s pretty recent

You can have Moog “upgrade” the 104z into an SD, it’s a factory mod.

As far as the brightness goes, you can use an EQ pedal in the loop to change the tone, but it doesn’t produce a wider bandwidth sound.

I’m a total fan of the tone for my uses - the pedal seems to favor some instruments / playing styles to others. You could try hitting the input with a brighter tone too, but that would ultimately fade to dark…

I have found that having one Moog delay in an effect arsenal does not cover a lot of ground from the terms of delay tones, but it has mojo that no other does - not even the Strymon Timeline can duplicate it. I own the Timeline to cover all of the other sounds…

thanks everyone for the useful answers!!

i’ll definitely go through the topics here to find out about the SD factory mod, i might have a couple spare 3008s sleeping somewhere
about the brightness, i wish someone had been insane enough to reverse engineer the 104 so that we could try to mod the schematics… i’m not sure it would be the best idea in the world, but it would quite a journey!! i’d love to find some sort of combination of the 104 and the deluxe memory man, if they could merge and breed the “perfect bbd delay”…
(possible message in a bottle right here!!!)

I’m using the MF-104Z as well as EHX delays myself. But this is more a function issue than a sound issue: the DMM with tap tempo is awesomely thought.
I guess the MF-104M is the one for me…

that’s what i thought but i went to talk to the guy at the pedal store in paris, he told me that after 2006 the moogerfooger pedals didn’t sound as good as the previous ones, and he also had several complaints of people working in record studios, that’s why i tried to find an old unit (also it has more character!!)
i’m trying to repair one of my DMM so that i can add a few new features like send/return, and volume control… i’ll see how it’ll turn out!

Good ol’ “guy at the peddle store” story.

It doesn’t matter which year of Moog you buy - they sound excellent regardless. Effect boxes are a lot like wine. The $7 boss does the job, but the $30 Moog is a reliable enjoyment if you like that sort of thing. Sometimes there is a difference in the year, but the grapes still get mashed by the same feet

The 104M is probably the closest to the middle ground of the DMM & 104z… But I haven’t sampled all of the options to be certain.

Yeeeah…I’m SO MUCH into forums that when I go to a shop, the guy often knows less than me
The comparison with wine is cool, I must say

Frances Rhodes, what Paris shop did ou go to? Do you live there?..

yeah i live in paris, i moved there 12 months ago. i went to “la pédale”, in the 9th “arrondissement” (close to a “borrough” i think…), the only pedal store left open. the other closed a while ago. why that? have you been to paris?

Actually I live just half an hour away from Saint Lazare by train

hehe dans ce cas, plus besoin de continuer en anglais !!
