Two improvements over the original(that I wil still love/keep) are:
The FEEDBACK now works as a ‘hold’ control so you can make loops when you max out the pot.
The LONG/SHORT switch works as a 1 octive up/down switch. So you can jump up or down from your infinite loops. Very cool feature that I wished the original could of done.
i think that as time flows on there will be people out there that will prefer one particular 104 to another, i like using very short delay times (but not all the time you understand) so in that particular aspect the original 104 comes out on top followed by the z and the sd is last, but in long delays the original is last and the sd comes out on top leaving the z in the middle again
short time
1 mf 104
2 mf 104 z
3 mf 104 sd
long time
1 mf 104 sd
2 mf 104 z
3 mf 104
features (like all the cv and feeback loop stuff)
= mf 104 mf 104z mf 104 sd
sound quality
= mf 104 sd mf 104z (as far as we can tell)
2mf 104
the octave thing with, that’s a really cool feature and i think that main thing that i would prefer about the sd (hope the z also does this)
maybe the fact that the numbers of the z are so easy to work with 50-500 100-1000
might make that preferable to some, who knows
At the lowest setting in the LONG mode the 104SD produces TOTAL rockabilly slapback delay. Slapback for dummys. In the SHORT delay mode again adjusted for minimum amount of delay the SD gives you nice bathroom reverb with the feedback up somewhat but not all the way.
I can’t imagine anyone who is actually using one of these to care about any “numbers” or how many MS are involved. This is more of a feel instrument.
Man I think I’ll be happy just to have a Moog delay. People seem to like them so much. I can’t wait to try out the Z. I hope I’m not disappointed. I’m happy that Moog made new ones. I hope I don’t start feeling disappointed for not having an SD. . . .better to have 1000ms instead of 0
i have 2 orig mf 104 and i have always run the loop out of the first into the second delay w/ my second delays mix all the way to the delayed sound and its input back into my first one… cool, although needs to be played with sometimes to get it just right, but worth it, if this is possible for you it is worth a try
