MF-104m background distortion

Hi MMF,

I just bought an MF-104M. Unfortunately, there’s a tinny, digital-sounding distortion when I plug it in and play, even when the unit is being bypassed.

Any idea why? I feel as though it could just be newbie oversight.

Cheers in advance,

Luke

Doesn’t sound good!

If you play into an audio interface and it’s distorting heavily, it might do this but if you are plugged right into an amp, unlikely. Check the DRIVE knob and be sure it’s not pegged all the way to the right; if this is your first Fooger, you should know that you’ll want the light amber during much of the highs but not red though occasional peaks are fine and sometimes desirable depending. I forget if the 104m leaves the DRIVE part of the circuit enabled even when disengaged (red). Be sure MIX knob is all the way to the left so that you are not getting the processed signal.

I can tell you that Moog does good QC on the line after build so when it left the factory, it worked. Connectors have been known to dislodge during handling/transit. I’m not about to tell you to open it up and check (you should call Moog support) but I wouldn’t be surprised. If you do get inside of a MoogerFooger, you’ll see that they use a glue-gun to keep the connector in place but sometimes I suppose this doesn’t do the job.

If you bought it from a reseller (like Sweetwater or whatever), maybe call them first instead and just have them ship you a new one! Sucks to have to wait a week or whatever but you’ll be happy when you get a fresh unit that works as it should!
