So I have a Little Phatty Stage II with CV/GATE OUT MOD and a new CP-251 Control Processor, and I wanted some of your opinions on which (1) Moogerfooger I should add to the set-up? The MF-101 Low Pass Filter or the MF-102 Ring Modulator?
I know probably most “Moogers” will probably say the MF-102 Ring Mod, but honestly I feel like having a 2nd Moog filter and Envelope sounds pretty interesting to me!
would appreciate your thoughts, tips, ideas, wisdom, etc!
The MF-101s can be a lot of fun too… I have four of them
If you go with it, using it on the LP itself could be interesting, but the real fun starts when you run other things through it and modulate the 101 cutoff freq with the LP CVs. I’ve got a number of digital synths and almost all of them are running through a 101.
The middle part of this video shows a Motif run through two 101s… one on left, one on right. Using the CP-251 Mult and Inverting Attenuators to make two CVs that are mirror images of each other. In the video, the source is the LP Pitch CV Out. The resultant CVs are sent to the filter cutoff of each 101.
Make sure you process a signal (like the pad in the video) with a lot of high frequency content. Filters need something to filter out! Turning up the resonance on the 101s make filter modulations more noticeable as well.
You could also use the envelope CVs for the phatty when it is arpeggiating to get some nice rhythmic (especially synced to MIDI clock) bumps happening on the 101.
Your uses may be a bit different, but I’d suggest if you are going to use the LP, 251 and Moogerfooger as a stand-alone system, go with the ring mod. If you can or want to run other things (synth pads, drum beats, field recordings) through it, go with the low pass filter… although nothing says you couldn’t process external signals with the ring mod too. Pitch CV Out to 102 osc freq in, arpeggiate the LP, switch the ring mod to lo range and you’ve got tremolo speed changes happening every time the LP changes notes.
hey chrsstack! great video! beautiful gear! love the black lp with factory mods pre-installed : ) I have the red one : )
yes, I am planning on using this “small” but powerful set-up as a stand-alone system. like a Moog mini modular system : ) I’ve talked to a couple different “moogers” on this forum that have inspired/influenced me to do/try it.
so do u recommend the mf-102 ring mod because used with the lp with cv/gate out mod and cp-251 control processor there is “more possibilities” than with the mf-101 low pass filter?
thanks for the tips, demos, etc!
keep them coming, everyone!
thanks.
oh! and p.s. would you say that having a 2nd Moog low pass filter with the lp and cp-251 already is kind of “unnecessary” like I’m sure some others would?
If I were you Id join the yahoo users group Knobtweak if you aren’t already a member and there is a lot of useful info there. The link to it is in my signature. It is a valuable resource. There is a great article there that goes IN Depth about the benefits of the Ring Mod called Lord of the Ring Mod.
When evaluating which Fooger to get, think about them like this:
How will it benefit the system Im building? What feature benefits my needs the most?
It will either process your audio or add a voltage source to your modulation ability.
The 101 will do both, but the voltages it produces are dependant on the incoming signal. WOrks as extra Osc
the 102 adds clangorous sounds, and a LFO as a voltage source in addition to simulating a VCA. Only fooger that adds a new sound. Also works as extra Osc
103 a great phaser, but gives you a very wide range lfo as a great voltage source Stereo effect touches on ring modulation
104 is a fantastic delay, hands down. Not a voltage source though, processor only.
105, Processor only, great effect! Not a voltage source Stereo effect
107 same voltage outputs as 101, Osc out for dirty FM sounds. It IS an Osc. (will also do rind modulation when a voltage pushes it beond its useful range)
Mp201, Midi to cv converter, 4 independant voltage sources with a multitude of voltage types available (lfo, S&H, loopable env gens, etc)
Knobtweak has a chart with all of the features…just join and explore!
I posted this a long time ago because the issue of having redundant modules kept coming up again and again. In this thread, the op was asking if he needed to sell his 101 because he got a phatty, and or which fooger to get to go with it.
