new here, been playing guitar for some time, and am currently finding most amps i play have a harsh higher end past the 3-4khz points. I’m currently using a slo-100 (clone) with the stock (about +4db) fx loop. To tame these unpleasant frequencies, i’ve diy’ed a 4-pole passive low-pass filter and placed it in the fx loop. Of course this is a very dirty fix which is an eye sore for me and I wanted to put the 101 in place in the fx loop. I realize i can use the tone control of the guitar, but the problem is the pre-amp saturation of the amp (and i find several other amps) so i was wondering if i used the 101 at 100% mix with 0 resonance in the loop, would it work correctly? Has anyone ever tried this?
I wouldn’t classify myself as an expert on this stuff, but as no-one else is responding I thought I’d offer my 2cents.
It should do what you want it to do. I’ve got a different outboard filter module and it will act as a tone shaper in an effects loop, and provide a cut in the top end frequency without noticeably changing the rest of your sound too much. I say too much because some guitar players are a bit dubious on the Moog drive circuit. I’d say, get a second hand one and move it on if it doens’t work, or plug in an expression peddle and you’ve got a pretty cool wah.
I used this method for some time and I must say it worked really well.
I used it in a Jazz setting. It worked just like tone control on the guitar. So what I was doing, I wanted to have foot control over tone control on the guitar, but that was impossible. I was getting that Jazz sound and for some moments I opened the filter with expression pedal for some brighter tones. I liked the idea of playing melodies and lines with muted sound and chords with bright sound.
So with Mix to max and resonance to nine o’ clock I could have a foot control over that.
I also expended this concept when I bought MP-201 which can handle 4 expression destinations, and run it into moog delay for delay mix and delay time in, for some LFO modulation. So when I played chords there was beautiful bright delayed/chorused sound and with just one foot I could go back to that Jazz sound.
Amazing what can you come up with with all this moog gear!
Ou, and about FX Loop… I always put my moogs in there.
I just make sure that I don’t drive preamp too much, so the input on moogs is green/yellow.
And I noticed some compression from them if there are more than two. But I like that compression. It is natural sounding.
And there is less noise if I place them into fx loop.
