Memorymoog Plus Backups to PC

I’m wondering how to backup my patches via the cassette interface to my PC. I tried using a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to the microphone in on my PC, but it didn’t work. I also tried using the Line In, but nothing happened (nothing was recorded in the DAW, and no sound was detected by the meter in sound settings in control panel - which means the issue is before the DAW). I checked to make sure that the cassette interface was working by plugging it into my mixer, and there was sound. However, there was a static sound when nothing was being done with the cassette interface… is that normal?

Any ideas?

Sorry if this is a stupid question/has a fairly obvious solution.

Any ideas on how to make it backup to my PC would be great.

Thanks!

BTW - Computer is a Windows Vista Home Premium. I’m trying to record with Audacity. The sound card is an integrated Realtek card, but I can’t find the model anywhere.

The sound of the cassette output should be like this sound:

I stored the Memorymoog presets from my customers often in the PC and it works fine.
BTW of course you have to start the transfer by pressing the button “C” and “1” and ENTER.
Have fun,
Rudi

Thanks for the reply -

That is the sound I get. (The static stopped when I hit C1. )

Anyways, how do you connect it? The mic in and line in do nothing for me.

Sorry, I don’t understand. First you wrote nothing was recorded and then you wrote “That is the sound I get.”

There is sound when I plug it into my amp, so the cassette interface is working. What I mean is that the computer isn’t picking up the sound, on both the line in and mic in. Should it be working on one of those? 1/4" to 1/8" mono adapter, right?

Then it’s a sound card or computer problem. I have no experiences in sound cards … maybe you have to switch on the line or mic input on your computer.

You want to use the line in on your sound card, it’s possible some sound cards share the same input and you have to select which one in the control panel. Either way it might be a good idea to check the level adjustment in there… Depending on the version of Windows, get to the control panel , click on sound devices, click on the audio tab. Look to make sure your sound card is selected for recording. Next clik on volume and see where the levels are set and if line is checked.

With the audio cable you’ll need a ¼” TR ( MONO) to go from the MemoryMoog to a 1/8" TRS(stereo) on the sound card. You may be able to find the cable readymade or you may have to use adapters.

Good luck

Had the same problem, I just used another computer. Can’t explain why it doesn’t work, tried everything on the soundcard. You can’t buy data cassettes anymore and audio cassettes have too many dropouts. Plus my portable cassette player I used for backups crapped out and the speed varies from player to player so there is no guarantee that another one will work. It just makes sense to use the computer soundcard.

This method certainly works with other synths. I’ve been doing this with Oberheim gear for years. Must have something to do with sensitivity to line level; surely a high sample rate of a very primitive audio stream would be easy enough to reproduce to the synth’s satisfaction?

It’s been a long time since I’ve backed up/ reloaded patches to a MemoryMoog from tape and have never tried backing it, or others up to the computer . If you are having problems getting a good recording/level with the line in try the mic in, thinking back I think I had success on old tape recorders, been too long  From what I remember the MM was not to picky about how hot the signal coming in to restore (playback into the MM to reload from tape), too low or high and it would shut down pretty fast but there was a fairly wide range it accepts.

On the other hand the Chroma Polaris is very temperamental on the playback level.

My fear is that, like Rudi said, the issue is with the sound card. I’ll try the TRS adapter and see how that goes.

Tripple check your input levels and make sure the input is active . It could be the sound card, try another audio source and see if it works with that. Do you have another computers ( as MC said) or anything else you can try to record on ?

I still have 10 brand new Radio Shack C-20 data cassettes, never opened. I may also have a recorder - will have to check. Is there interest in these items? I’m not sure I want to dispose of them, but yet they’ve been dormant for years.

The stereo adapter did it. It recorded the backups for both the programs and the sequences, and the Memorymoog verified them. So, I guess it’s resolved.

Thanks to everyone that replied.

You’re welcome  Glad it worked for you.
