Memorymoog first opinions

Well, ive had my memorymoog plus for almost a week now and thought i’d share my thoughts with my fellow enthusiasts! Firstly i’m pleased to say that this poly lives up to the hype surrounding it. As a poly i really don’t think it can be beat for sheer sonic quality and power.

The oscs are beautifully rich sounding and i love the fact you can select multiple waveforms for each osc as well. In mono mode the synth can easily impersonate the mini and voyager, particularly if you turn off some of the voices. The memorymoog has the classic moog sound like the mini and source whereas the voyager has the modern (different not worse) moog sound.

Modulation is simple but great with options to send to filter freq, pwm or filter. The filter itself has a massive frequency range and means that the mem+ can hold its own as a bass monosynth as well AND it can do this next to the voyager. I particularly like the way the filter and mixer distorts and such a musical way, this is something i find difficult to do on the voyager.

If I could only keep one analogue synth in my rig, this would be the one as it is so versatile and powerful sounding.

Hey,
Congrats on the MM.
I love my MM+, and some of my favorite features are the following:
I like the Hold button…what I do is clench a long wooden spoon in my teeth while I am playing a six note chord, and with the end of the spoon i press the hold button…EUREKA! Instant video game soundtracks…or John Williams(vague joke). If you keep the six note chord hold on (perhaps a wide ranging chord) and then press arpeggiate, you will get some cool arps. and if it on hold they are always fun to doodle with. I also use the Hold feature to make simple 5ths or 7ths or whatever, and play some of the organ sounding patches for some killer B3-ish solos.
The trumpet is fun with the old C-D#-G, play darth vadars theme.
Anyway, one of my trimpots is starting to die…so i have to replace it. But it woks all 6 voices about 70 percent of the time, or I just turn the bad one off if i feel like not calibrating.
Um…I also like to set the filter for 1/3 and keyboard follow for the envelope for some very snappy high range space pianos.
Anyway,
Have fun.
Probably better than my Prophet 5, but not as reliable. Reliability not being the issue, my Chroma is the best Polysynth ever IMHO.

didn’t realise thats what the hold buttons for, will check that out later. So far 6 voices tune up everytime and i’ve been using the mem + on for recording several hours a day.The midi works fine as well, limited as it is.hopefully it wont let me down! The breadth of sounds this board is capable of is astounding. everytime i play it i get so inspired i’ve got record cycling round all the time in logic!

Was just thinking about the possibilty of a new moog poly and what that would entail.I dont reckon moog will be able to bring a poly out of this quality at a price point we can all afford. The evolver looks and sounds great, but for me 4 note poly is too limiting for doing any serious jobs. Thats where that board falls flat for me. Any new poly from moog needs to be 6 voice minimum in order to play for example a four note right hand chord and a bass line at the same time.I’ll be sticking with the memorymoog for good me thinks!

Dan.

Beam, you can rotate those failing trimpot 180 degrees on the circuit board. You’ll have to do a full calibration (tune by ear when the VCO is this far out, don’t use the display) but the wiper will be positioned in a fresh spot far away from the bad spot. I did this ten years ago and they’re still fine.

Goldphinga, wait until you play with voice modulation. Use VCO3 as an LFO, set it to track the keyboard, and use it to slightly modulate the pitch of VCO2 but not VCO1. Each voice gets its own LFO with its own frequency. Great for pads, strings, and stuff. That’s not the only trick with voice modulation - you can get radical FM sounds too. I learned a lot playing around with the MM, and many tricks have carried over to the Voyager.

The MM+ is a fave of mine. My Andromeda comes close, but not quite there. I have tricks in that machine that only the MM+ can do. Likewise with the Andromeda. I’ll never sell them.
