He posted this on the forums a while ago, but I think it needs some more attention. This is the best synthesizer record I have heard in a long time. I love how dry it sounds. I often fall into the trap of coating everything in layers of delay/reverb, but all the effects in this record are so tasteful and necessary, which really just sheds light on the straight up, good musicianship on the album. The textures are interesting, and at times they’re so delicious I feel like I need to bite into them. Marty, is there any way I can get a hard copy or perhaps a download? I’d love to have this on my hard drive!

Kenneth,

Thanks for the props. I got interested in synthesis about two years ago trying to figure out what my rock band should use to reproduce string sounds live (settled for a microKorg) and then got really obsessed. This record was a lab of sorts, I learned a great deal trying to get analogues to distorted guitar, etc. The Moogerfoogers were the only effects I used (other than a little compression/verb on the mix), didn’t even EQ anything.

Feel free to share it around!

Thanks, man, I’m downloading it now. I really appreciate you allowing free downloads of this. I’ve been clamoring for a solid new synthesizer record to listen to, and yours fits the bill! If I may be so bold: What synthesizers did you use in the making of this album? Lots of really unique timbres, and I’m a geek (just like everyone else around here).

That reminds of Brian Kehew’s style. Great stuff.

The bass was Taurus 3 and the rest was Voyager XL. I used the Freqbox in the insert and ran the VXL mono out to a Moogerfooger array: ring mod->phaser->delay. Overdriving the 'foogers in different degrees and combinations contributed a lot to the final sound.

Thanks again for the encouragement.

Peace,
Marty

Interesting effects array. As I said before, I was surprised at the lack of delay, and I think that dryness really gives the record its personality. Most synthesists coat their sound in delay, and I find it somewhat revolutionary that you chose not to. It actually inspired me to try recording some music without effects, as a challenge for myself. I have been wanting to get a hold of some foogers: you did some really awesome sounding stuff with that ring mod, and I’d like to try my hand at it.

At the very least, you need an MF102, 103, and CP-251. Add a MuRF, Clusterflux, Freqbox and 104 if needed.
