Looking specific MF-101 modifications

Hello MoogerFooger-Forum,

i recently got the MF-101, and i really like the fatness of the sound, but there are some things i feel not so comfortable with,
so maybe anyone has done this yet ? I’m using the MF-101 for bass guitar, btw.

1.) The AMOUNT-Control is too ‘tame’ for my taste …
Before i switched to the MF-101, i was using a MicroModular as lowpass filter, and the Envelope follower was REALLY sensitive,
which was especially good for tapping parts, because i could control the whole lowpass range just with my fingertip … would changing
the AMOUNT pot help ?

Actually, i’ve turned AMOUNT all the way up, and this is the MINIMUM setting for me … it could have double the effect for me.

The Decay-Time could be much faster, too, but that is secondary … ideal would be some Attack/Decay pots, instead of just the Fast/Smooth switch, but really, it’s secondary …

To achieve what i want, i have to turn the DRIVE up much too far for normal playing (Level LED is Red most of the time when playing normally)

Which leads to my second point …

2.) I feel uncomfortable with the DRIVE before the Bypass … i don’t really like a permanent Booster in my signal, especially because i have to turn it way up to achieve the effect i want … it’d be cool to have the drive after the bypass, and some kind of attenuator afterwards, so the overall level doesn’t change when switching it on …

Ideas anyone ? Are some of the things even possible ?

Thanks, n

Use the envelope out jack back into the cutoff with a boost in between or just straight to enhance the Env follower. The drive is not true bypass, which actually from what I have heard true bypass sucks because of impedance issues. Best to get a simple attenuator/gain pedal to switch on/off with the 101 for level matching.

Great choice for bass. I play both active and passive basses, and have always found regardless of the power you present at the gain stage of the MF-101, the tone can create a more dramatic effect.

The suggestion from unfiltered37 to patch the envelope out cv to the freq in cv will bypass the rise and fall circuit and get you a faster rise and fall, and should cover as much range as is available.

As far as the drive goes, you could use a true bypass looper which works great, or you could use a boot pedal before the 101. I use both, but I also use one other little trick - treble & upper mids.

Try an EQ pedal, or active bass with the bass frequencies rolled back a bit, and the treble / mids boosted a bit. Or use stainless strings (Ernie ball cobalt a are getting great support) for a brighter tone going into the filter. Two things happen, you can reduce the gain, and the pronounced effect is greater. You may read “turn down the bass” and think what is this guy on - just try it. EQ is a wonderful thing!
