So I got a minikorg synthesizer for christmas (I know this is a moog forum, let me finish) and I was hoping to be able to recreate some of the classic moog sounds which I figured i’d be able to do. Nope. It plays every other sound known to man except it. So I was wondering if i ran it through a moog expression pedal or something of the like could i get the moog sound? Or am I just out of luck and need to save up for an actual moog?
You can pretty it up with any moog/mooger effects etc but essentially, you’ll be dealing with the same sound source. I’d recommend looking at a cheap post-mini moog or Arturia’s softsynth programs (which of course are also not the same as the originals 
) if the moog sound is what you really are looking for. You just can’t beat moog filters period.
On that note, I’d highly recommend the MF-101. Never used it in person, myself, but I’ve heard both sound samples and the rave reviews. If that filter explains the ghusto of the Minimoog, I’d recommend you go with that one.
I have a MF 101, and it’s great. While you might like it as well, it’s not going t turn anything you run through it into a moog. But it will get you closer, especially if you have a CV source that will let you do sweep the cutoff.
From a different perspective, you might try plugging the MiniKorg into an Oberheim SEM module, if you know where to find one. Some may say that the 12dB filter isn’t as beefy as a Minimoog filter, but I do believe that it DOES have a CV output suitable enough to control the 101’s cut-off. And, I’m sure it would fatten up the Korg’s sound considerably.
Here’s a suggestion that makes sense:
Sell/return your microkorg and go buy a Rouge or the like. It doesn’t matter how much you spend, you will never make a bottom-of-the-line, digital, Korg sound like a Moog. To help you I have created the following hypothesis:
Moog=Moog
Korg=Korg
Moog+Korg=Still not Moog
Sorry to break it to you, but only a moog can be a moog. But hey, look at this way, only korg can be korg. Korg’s not bad, it just isn’t moog.
I agree with this above, though the Korg isn’t a digital synth.
It’s actually older than the Moog Rogue too.
For that matter, a Rogue, when compared to a Moog modular or Minimoog, is hardly much of a Moog itself in terms of classic “Moog sound.”
The filter and oscillators are very different from the earlier ones.

Presumably if you are buying a MicroKorg you can’t afford a MiniMoog much less a modular anything. A Rogue will get you closer to both the look, and the hands on feel of a Moog. If you want a MiniMoog go buy a mini, but it’s a completely different price range.

The best part of that thing is the vocoder.
I think there’s a bit of confusion here: do you mean the analog miniKorg (ca. 1973 ish) or the new digital miniKorg (complete with vocoder)? I remember seeing the old miniKorg advertised in the back of Creem and heavily lusting after it…

The vocoder one. Was there one called a miniKorg and one called a microKorg. I know the name on this new one is micro.
