Little/Slim Phatty - change presets by CC?

Hi all

This may be a question that’s been asked before, but I can’t find any real reference to it - so is it possible to change presets or performance set values on the fly via a CC message? I’d love to be able to embed a preset change in a midi stream. Given that there are only 100 preset register, I’d imagine that an appropriate CC would enjoy a simple range of 1-100. Am I barking up a wrong tree? Thanks for any advice!

Program change = presets.
CC = parameters (see apendix in the manual).

Thanks, but that doesn’t really answer my question. I know how to enable and disable the SP or LP’s ability to receive and send program changes, but I want to know if there is a specific CC message to change the current preset to any another on the fly - i.e. Currently set to “32 ARGURU”, and want to sent a message from my DAW to change that to “58 QUIET JACOB”.

I think there is no way to do that.

Why not use the Program Changes from your DAW? They are made for that very purpose.

In the midi protocol, pitchbend and program change are special messages that get their own category separate from CCs. You will usually not find a CC mapped to either one of those. If your sequencer will not permit you to program “program change” triggers you can use hardware or software that will translate the CC message you programmed in your sequencer to a program change message the phatty will respond to.

OK - I think I needed to re-visit the manual. I’ve now found reference to it in there, and it mentions “true number”. Now I just have to figure out where it is and how to get Live 8 to do it. Can’t be all that hard eh? I have never done any “program changes” over midi from a DAW before. I’m just not familiar with the terminology yet. Thanks for the help!

Also, be aware they are sometimes off by a value of 1. To get preset 83 you need to send 84. Sometimes not. Depends on how the sequencer and synth are configured.

its super simple to do a program change in live.

On each clip, you have a couple fields in the lower left hand side. There will be 3 drop down tabs. Bank, Sub Bank, and Program. Each sub bank supports 128 presets listed in the program drop down and you can have 128 sub banks in each bank, and you can have 128 banks. The LP only has one bank of 100 programs (likewise, the Voyager has 7 banks of 128 programs each). You should be able to just change the “Program” value to which ever preset number you want (minus 1 because the LP starts at 00). When the clip plays, it will change the LP to that preset.

I cant remember if the LP cares about which bank/sub bank you send it, i think it needs “sub bank” set to 1, but just play around with it. Its pretty intuitive.

The live manual has more details in section 8.3

The day i discovered program change was awesome… But i have been annoyed by it on occasion… I find a cool preset, copy past a midi clip to an external instrument track hit play, and bam, it changes the preset to the bank saved on the midi clip, doh!.. But thats just something you gotta be careful with if you copy/paste midi clips a lot. So, if you find make a new sound, make sure you save the preset before you send any midi clips to it… I learned that from experience.

Cheers

Thanks so much for your help fellas. Much appreciated. I’ve figured it out just fine in reference to Live 8, and now I’ve added a page called “Program Changer” to my iPad’s installation of Lemur that lets me select and change to a new preset on the fly from there too. Wow - it’s all very cool! Hopefully my new Little Phatty arrives Saturday - then it’ll be fun all over again.
