I was wondering if you guys wouldn’t mind posting a few quick examples of where to start learning how to sculpt basic sounds. So far, I’ve just been twiddling knobs… it took me 30 minutes to get a decent helicopter sound.
I’ve read some articles on subtractive synthesis & compiled my own text file as a reference to the main sections. I usually start with the oscillators, filter, & then on to modulation & EG. My results are a bit more than random as I do not understand parameter dependencies or how to route & affect Osc2 & the Filter EG.
If a few of you would consider posting a couple exercises, I’m sure the light bulb will come on & I can at least get productive with my fiddling about. I would much appreciate your spending a few minutes bringing me up a notch. I will contine reading & tweaking!
…you’re already on the right path!.. keep tweaking and keeping notes…
…now, you can help yourself out by: 1) listen to patches you like amongst the factory sounds, and carefully write down the settings, then adjust each and take note of the changes to the sound, and 2) start out from scratch, and eliminate all complexity to begin: set ADSR to 0,0, full, 0, filter cutoff to medium, no resonance (none, that is, until you begin exploring modulation to the filter) … now dive in and really explore that oscillator section… I remember years back being really confused with the sync parameter… on the LP, I find it an incredibly rich tone-sculpting tool… 3) write on in diagram fashion the signal flow of your patch; you’re already doing this, but write everything down, from left to right…
The menu-based modulation system of the LP is where it gets tougher, mostly because it is not as immediate as the front panel controls, obviously… try each modulation routing, being especially aware of the interplay of filter settings… lastly, there is a wealth of possiblities in the LFO section… much happens as the LFO reaches the audible frequency range…what’s that? That’s when it gets going so fast that it produces a pitch of it’s own… in any case, simplify, study and listen… and make sure to have fun doing it! – best, jgirv
