Little Phatty midi questions

Can the LP control the Voyager rackmount via its midi out?

Is the LP a usefull midi controller for softsynths - ie especially the Arturia Moog Modular V software?

If you mean can you use the LP’s knobs to control equivalent Voyager functions, the answer is a qualified yes. If you compare the Voyager and LP MIDI Continuous Controller (CC) assignments, you’ll find they match, but there are issues to consider:

  1. Save for the rocker switches, all Voyager parameters use two MIDI Continuous Control (CC) messages (MSB, LSB) to specify the parameter value. The LP only transmits a single CC value. For example, the Voyager uses CC#19 (MSB) and CC#51 (LSB) to specify the Filter Cutoff. The LP uses only CC#19 to specify Filter Cutoff. This means that the Voyager’s Filter Cutoff can be controlled from the LP’s Filter Cutoff knob, but not in a truely precise manner since the LP doesn’t send the LSB message.

  2. Some parameters have no equivalents. For example, the Voyager has a Filter Spacing control (MSB CC#20, LSB CC#51) that the LP lacks, and the LP doesn’t transmit CC#20. On the other hand, the LP’s Overload parameter (CC#18 ) has no corresponding function on the Voyager, so adjusting the Overload knob will have no effect on the Voyager (the Voyager doesn’t use CC#18 ).

  3. The CC value assignments connot be reassigned on either synth, so there’s no way to remap unused CC’s to take advantage of them.

That said, you may find that there’s still sufficient control for your needs. Why not try it?

I would think so, provided you don’t need more than a three octave keyboard range. The Moog Modular V software parameters can be programmed to accept any MIDI CC message. Note, however, that there are potentially a lot more controls in the MMV (depending on the patch) than there are available MIDI CC messages, but you’ll probably only need a handful for most applications (Filter cutoff & resonance, ADSRs, Oscillator frequencies, etc.).

many thanks Greg. Might see about getting the rackmount to control from the LP.
