Synthmuseem mentions of 7 (seven) being built. Another source (don’t remember where) says KE bought his from Led Zep. He himself sold it to someone else not long after the Pirates tour. New owner apparently still has it.
I suppose sources are fairly accurate, still it’s bordeline speculations at one point. A case in point was Elton John supposedly using a ‘brandx’ model. He later clarified in an interview that he was under some contract obligation and only had his picture taken with the unit. and that was that.
John Medeski of Medeski, Martin, and Wood uses:
Hohner d6 Clavinet
Moog Voyager
ARP - Ensemble something?
Piano
Rhodes and Wurlitzer
Hammond B3
Mellotron
also MF-104 and MF-102
i know TV on the Radio also uses Moog Voyager for all bass lines instead of having a bass player
From what I know , Keith bought the GX1 used on Works Vol. One and Love Beach in the mid 70’s. There are a few videos and recordings of him playing live on the works tour. He bought John Paul Jones GX1 in the early 80’s right around the time of the Emerson Lake and Powel recording and tour. Part of th story is that a tractor trailer had gone off the road and crashed into his barn damaging several instruments including the original GX1. Keith said in an interview in Keyboard in the early 80’s that the original had actually blown up. At some point JPJ, who was a neighbor down the street, asked if Keith wanted to buy a GX1….he need thje room for a new sofa or something .
I’m not sure if that is the GX that went on the EL Powel tour or not. One of them tough was supposedly modified with MIDI out. After that tour though it came back pretty unplayable.
I don’t think he used it much more after that, I think it was in the early 90’s that he auctioned off a bunch o gear, the GX1’s included. Hans Zimmer bought one of them and had Yamaha do a major restoration of it.
