Krautrock Phaser compared to MF-103 ?

I love phasers and have both a Small Stone and Krautrock Phaser from Mode Machines http://www.modemachines.com/en/products/?id=1. Neither have a smooth sweep, both have lopsided cycles so that some parts of the sweep are too slow or too fast. However, they both sound incredible and quite different. its not easy to guess how a chord sounds through either until you try them.

Can anyone comment on how different the Krautrock Phaser sounds compared to the MF-103? I hesitate to buy a third phaser, but hey if its different enough…

Looks like a shameless copy to me. They could have at least shaped it differently.

Not a copy.

Krautrock is based on photocouplers, MF-103 is OTA-based. Different phase shifting cores, different sound.

Thanks MC. The Small Stone is also an OTA design like the 103 yet they sound very different. So even the core design isn’t the whole story. Its hard to tell what the 103 sounds like when the youtube demoes are blues licks :unamused:

Didn’t say it was a copy, but the box is obviously a copy of the MF design. And Mode sounds a lot like moog. I have no problem with copies, they’re usually cheaper and sometimes better, but that company is not very original.

Mate, this is a loving recreation of a german 70s phaser design. An iconic sound in Berlin School. This thing is history. Its almost twice the cost of the MF103 so there goes the ‘cheap copy’ theory. And it is definitely not trying to be a MF.

I was fascinated by that phaser - obsessed even. I’ve been listening to a lot of Tangerine Dream and finally feel like I can recognize when it is being used. Never got to hear one in person though.

I do have an MF-103 - I use it a lot on this track: philtre 927 - the synth part is a Micro Moog - I think it’s on every synth part except the filter sweep parts - hope this helps!

I have all three, the Small Stone, Krautrock and MF-103. I find that they’re all very different, they each have their own character and I can use one of each (or even two simultaneously) dependant on what I’m looking for at the time.
