KNOBZ.NET: Synth Improvisations

Hi

I’m considering “going live” with my Moog setup.
Lately I’ve heard an absolutely awful “contemporary/experimental music” performance (and it was supposed to be cool, hip and whatever), which made me leave the show early, so I thought, maybe I can do it too (in a less awful and noisy manner of course

So preparing for this I’m going to record some videos of synth improvisations revolving around certain synthesis techniques.
I’ll be posting them in this topic.

This time “sample-and-hold”.

Enjoy!

I’m looking forward to hearing this

Let me know when You do

Ok I’ve just watched it. Reading your post I though this was going to be a tutorial as you’ve done some already.

You know what? I have to stop buying little stuffs and get this CV-out expansion for good. I own/aim cool pedals like Mooger Foogers or some cool EHX with expression pedal input, but I always get back to this: no modulation source from the synth!!

I found some really interesting textures. The Ring Mod is undoubtedly responsible for most of them. S&H is something I don’t use that much but these 6’ had me convinced to explore it a bit more.

Thanks for sharing

Actually I don’t use CVout in this one, but yes, it’s a big improvement in a modular environment.
My next step is a mp-201, cause I need tempo synced LFOs and envelopes.

I’ll try to make a video with CVout sometime soon.

Ah ok… so I guess the S&H over pitch or filter only can get the ring modulator mad ?..

I like running the S&H from the CP251 into the ring mod’s carrier in, running the carrier out to the 103’s audio in, audio out from 103 to audio in of the LP. That’s one of many of my favorite tricks…if I’m feeling frisky I run the Audio out of the LP into the 102’s audio in while all this other stuff is going on, and move the audio out on the 102 to the amp.

Thank you for the video. How good is that. You’ve captured in a couple of minutes the reason why I love synthetic music.

Aaah ok. So it’s the CP’s S&H then.

So I eventually have a question: what’s woth the most between getting the CV-out on my phatty or getting a CP-251?

CV-out:

  • no additional stuff to carry nor plus nor power
  • linked to the controls on the Phatty → ONE instrument
  • linked to the controls on the Phatty → may be less appropriate for pure droning?..
  • limited possibilies with respect to CP
  • more expensive

CP-251:

  • more possibilities (thinking of multis here, and added LFOs, original waveforms…)
  • less expensive
  • independant of the Phatty → usable with other gear withour carrying the Phatty… I’m lazy.
  • one more stuff to carry, plug, power… I’m laaaaaaazy!

    Thoughs?..

You can use the LP’s S&H, can’t tell if that’s what’s going on in the recording here, though. What’s REALLY nuts is running the CP’s S&H into the pitch input on the LP while a patch utilizing the LP’s S&H is running with the arpeggiator. Highly useless, but fun.

Keep in mind, if you opt for CV out mod, you’ll be without the LP for a while during it’s stay at whatever shop it’s at. It’s the one mod I DON’T have on my LP, and unless I go to Ashville on vacation, I’m not getting it. The CP-251 is an invaluable tool that is absolutely priceless, limitless, and is an absolute must-have.

The local dealer is not so far from here and I know they take like 3-4 days for the whole stuff. Provided the mod is in stock.
I’ll consider the CP-251 a little longer though.

Opinions welcome

@Voltor07:

You gave me an idea, I’ll try to make one of my next tutorials about modulating the carrier signal in the ringmod, I bet it’ll produce cool sounds  Thanx!

A lot of the YouTube vids I have up feature that patch. Of course, unless you have a box of attenuators like I do, you’ll only get close to the effects I create. I also incorporate the mixer and both CP attenuators in my patches. Lots of modulation is the key to bizarre sounds.

I have two CP-251s and I’m going to use freqboxes oscillator and some lfos in the process + lowpass
on carrier and lowpass on audio out, could be fun. Bitcrusher/sample rate reduction along the way in the carrier chain might be interesting too.

ll watch Your videos. Is Your “box of attenuators” DIY or did You buy it somewhere, cause I was looking for something like this.

I did it myself. Working on Version 2.0 now. It includes voltmeters. Also, new, non-music video on my channel, if at all interested. Here is the link.

FYI I created a dedicated topic.
