Hello!
Has anyone tried to program the arpeggiating sound from ELP’s Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression on the Minimoog Model D or Voyager? Can it even be done? It can be heard at the 0:46 mark on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wz6Mj8cROJw
Thank you in advance for any input… ![]()
That was most likely done using Emo’s custom sample & hold unit with a delayed trigger..!
It sounds like it’s modulating the filter - not the pitch.
You could easily recreate that with the Moog 1125 sample & hold unit and the 911A dual trigger delay.
Cheers,
Tom
Thank you Tom! I was going to pm you about this… ![]()

If you manage to have a go at it please post a link to a video..!
I recently ‘cloned’ my 1125 and was testing it out with one of my Minimoog’s… here’s a link:

Sounds like the 960 sequencer playing an arpreggio on the modular to my ears? I believe you can see Keith using the same effect on the same Caljam vid on the Great Gates of Kiev around the 4:40 mark. Not sure how it is triggered, but looks to be a delay and starts after a held note and resets on the next keypress. Arpeggio sounds Iike root, fourth above then fourth above, then the same an octave above ending on the root two octaves above. So if in F the arpeggio would be F,Bb,Eb,F1,Bb1,Eb1,F2. Played fast at the end of the riff.
Back in 1975, I had a Minimoog and a Polyfusion AS1 seq. I would use that same fast sequence to get that cool Emmo sound. The Polyfusion, had a button you could push to get a one shot arpreggio like that. Fun stuff!
Thank you for the info guys! Awesome video on recreating the classic Prog sounds. I’m excited that it can be done… ![]()
I agree with you on the ‘Great Gates’ one Terry, you can actually hear the pitch changes… but the KE9 one in question sounds more to me like super fast re-triggering with an opening of the filter (with resonance) with each trigger. I can’t really hear pitch changes on that one…!?
Might have to extract that audio and slow it right down… a project for another day… ![]()

That’s not the bit the OP was talking about Dan..! ![]()
I know he actually used the 960… but you can also get that slow rising effect that Emo used on the ‘Great Gates’ using the S&H module… I did this with the 1125 unit I built… ![]()

Sorry to wake this old thread, but I also wanted to get this sound. I came up with a work around using 2 synthesizers and MIDI. I’ll attach my tutorial explaining the patch. If anyone has ideas as to how to improve this I’m happy to hear them.
