just starting out with synths

A patch is essentially a routing.

If you have an oscillator runnning through a filter, which is running out to a VCA then thats a patch.

If you have a distortion pedal on a guitar running to a chorus pedal running to a wah running to a volume running to your amp, thats a patch.

DIgitally, you can have the same things but architectually they are different. If you turn the reverb or chorus on, thats essentially a digital patch.

With something like the MiniMoog Model D, most of the main modules are already hardwired together, you just change the settings.

Like on a modular synth, nothing is connected together. You have to connect the keyboard and then connect the modules together for a sound. THats called a patch. You want a different sound you have to change most of the patch cables.

As far as sharing them, you can get software that will let you export your saved patches on the voyager or Phatty to a computer whicn can then be sent wherever.

Eric

if a moog voyager and lil fatty are complete units (as opposed to modular synths like .com) then whats the need for a CP-251 and other “moogerfoogers”? do they provide extra signals to be tinkered with in addition to the ones that are built in?

Yes, mallard. That’s exactly right. Watch some of my YouTube videos for examples of sounds that can be gotten from the LP and 'Foogers. There are other vids from much more talented people as well.

Basically what I meant by a complete unit is one that is totally self sufficient. A regular average joe might be totally satisfied with the Voyager, the PHatty< the Fantom AS IS. The Voyager is very well rounded and has reached a level of perfection that I doubt that Moog themselves can even improve upon.

So we call them complete because there are consumers of these products that don’t have the slightest usage whatsoever for. And the Voyager by itself is simply a beast.

BUT because the Voyager has a slew of CV inputs, because analog synths are voltage controlled, there is SO MUCH MORE that can be done beyond the end result of factory specs. And because the MoogerFoogers are the same way, they aren’t just mere effects processors. This is what the Vx351 and the Cp251 expans on.

WHen you start dealing with modular synthesis, you realize that you need an infinite amount of modules. This is why there are people out there with a huge system from dotcom and a Moog 55. Basically with MOdular stuff, the sky is just the beginning.

Eric

I am quite satisfied with my LP, but will be MORE satisfied with a FreqBox, 104z, set of Taurus III’s, and a dot com modular or two. All in due time, I suppose.

It’s funny you mention that… I’ve been surfing the dotcom site, thinking “gee… I could do $120/month…”

Must. Stop. Now.

I know! I could do $240 a month, and eat Easy Mac and ramen , and thus have TWO 22 space racks. www.mojomusicalsupply.com has this really nice green Taurus tolex that would look simply amazing! $135 for 10 yards! I could even use whatever was left to recover my Farfisa, amp, and whatever else needs covering.

Volt,
I want to get another mixer rack cabinet like Ive got.

I want to have a Voyager in the middle with a rack cabinet on either side. THe cabinet on the left will have the 101, 103, 105 (filter Bank) and underneath that 2 cp251 style units (lets see what Moog ends up making). Beneath that will be the Moog modules.

The left cabinet will be the one that you have already seen with additional Moog Modules.

So the way that it works out on the stand, the Foogers are almost exactly the same height as the Voyager’s panel. This way I can tweak with both hands. Whatever synths end up going between those two cabinets just all depends.

Choose between analog or digital , its allways fun to research on your own

“will work for synth”

Nice idea. I want to have my Little Phatty at a 60 degree angle with my Moogified Farfisa with the Taurus pedals underneath. The two 22 space cabinets will be bolted together in front of the double X stand holding the Voyager OS on an Ikea table. Under the table would be the 8 channel powered mixer, with the two Kustom dual 15" cabinets on either side of the table. Imagine seeing THAT when you first walk in the room. :open_mouth:

i forgot to ask…are there amps specifically tuned for keyboards and synths?

Yeah, keyboard amps. They accomodate the highs and the lows, whereas a bass amp covers the lows and a guitar covers the highs.

Voltor,
Why don’t you just get a 44 space cabinet then?

Because I can’t afford a 44 space system. But I CAN afford to make $240 payments, and besides…a walnut cabinet? How unoriginal. Who has a green tolex-covered modular?

Just FYI… the synthesizers.com entry system doesn’t get you a 22-module system. It gives you room for 22 modules, but only 10 modules – 13 spaces, I think – so think of the $240/month building a 22-module system… Think the entry system needs some LFOs, though…

Yeah, I know, Matt. But still. It gets you started. Once I get a starter, I’ll add a Q962 and a Q960. The second cabinet I’ll fill with filters and oscillators.
