Isao Tomita Patches?

Hi,

Does anyone here know how Isao Tomita created some of his famous sounds, such as:

Whistle?

Voice patches?

Bells?

As far as the whistle goes, there’s a YouTube video of him patching/playing When You Wish Upon a Star on a System 55. Looks like he used filter oscillation and maybe a 921 LFO for vibrato.
It’s a great vid–check it out.

There was an album released in Japan only in 1977 called Sound Creature, which showed some of the techniques he used to build some of his particular sounds, along with a booklet of illustrations of these techniques.
I don’t have this in my collection, but have always meant to track it down to check it out. I have seen some of the illustrations posted on the web in the past.

Cool, I will try to see if I can track that down.

I haven’t seen this video, but it sounds like he may have used a couple of different techniques. In about 1975 or so he demonstrated the whistle patch on Arabesque Number One by progressively filtering white noise.

Yep, it’s definitely white noise and cranking the filter resonance.
You should look up the video.
