Hi all! I’m the member of lots of forums covering everything from raising sheep and cactus to collecting knives and typefaces/fonts, and it’s always seemed that a forum that had a place for new members to introduce themselves set a positive tone that filtered out and down into all the more targeted threads.
So again, Hi All! I’m up in what’s called Northern New England in Midcoast Maine – close enough to the coast to smell the harbor at low tide but not close enough to have an expensive “ocean view.”
I’m not really a musician ..not really …not even close. But, computers/tech has long been a hobby and I have been fascinated by “digital sound” since the beginning. Back in the late 80’s I bought a Casio HT-700 keyboard to mess around with and noticed plug receptacles on the back labelled “MIDI in”, “..out” and “…Thru” I wound up having a Roland MPU-401 and a MT-32 hooked up to a PC running Windows 3.0. I cannot remember what software I ran on the PC – I do remember that it was almost “command line” stuff and didn’t even use the mouse …and it came on a 5.25" inch floppy disk.
Anyway, life got in the way and all the MIDI cables, etc. spent the last 20+ years in the barn. A couple of months ago I bought an iPad and stumbled on an app called Orphion – an iPad “instrument interface” developed by a young German named Bastus Trump who studied under Robert Henke. Suddenly I was thinking about using Orphion to generate different sounds – and I was out in the barn dusting off that old MT-32.
But, the real fun started when I started googling around on the web. WOW, digital music has evolved a bit since 1991! I’ve decided that I am going to learn Ableton Live 8 – even if it kills me!
Okay, I gotta go out and move some sheep fence …I really am a shepherd.
