Internal Noise Source on LP

For those who need noise on the LP, but can’t find it…:

Up until recently I have only used a Voyager (that has a noise generator) and heard a lot of people complain about the lack of a noise source on the LP. And indeed: there’s no noise to be selected on the front panel in the oscillatorsection, nor hidden away in the menu-section. At least: not as a SOUND source, only as a MODULATION source (MOD 6). Strange, so I thought, reading the manual online. The only solution that others came up with, was to use an EXTERNAL noise generator (like the CP251 or even a loop of a noise-sample from an iPod) and feed that into the audio-IN of the LP. That of course is a very legitimate way of doing so, but if that’s the only way to generate noise on a little Phatty, it seemed a bit cumbersome and disappointing to me.

However. I tried it yesterday: selecting NOISE as MOD source 6 (switch from OSC 2 to Noise in the menu), set the Modulation destination to OSC 2 and modulate 100% (AMOUNT all up and MOD wheel to maximum). This results in a very nice NOISE SOUND. OK, it’s not a perfectly clean white or pink noise, but it is very musical and shape-able (try varying the WAVE of OSC2). And, hey, isn’t that what the LP is all about: making MUSIC…
I might even prefer it over the noise that comes out of my Voyager…

For those in need of a clean white or pink noise: I’m afraid they indeed have to use a noise source on the external input.
Have Fun!

You Sir are a genius

I hope the “genius” comment is ironic, t’s hardly a hidden feature. There are downfalls of this method: 1) it disallows other commonly used types of modulation and 2) you lose the 2nd osc for tonal duties. It does however make a very good ‘pitched noise’ source for percussion etc.
