Insight on this Model D? A Modification?

This is John Baggot tweaking the MiniMoog with Robert Plant. I noticed this and thought one of you could shed some insight. Is this a Mod or what? If so does anyone know what it would do, or if not, what is this exactly? I thought that the tuning ports were on the back, parallel to the Osc board. Ive never seen one of these in person, but didn’t think that regular tuning ports would have hand marked labels either.

Yeah those are tuning trimpots. Range, Scale, Octave. Kinda redundant as they are already on the back panel.

What did they externalize them or something? Maybe they can be tuned by hand instead of sticking a tool in the rear?

Quite possibly. Though it’s hard to tell just from the pic.
