There is an excellent option available that doesn’t require spray paint, disassembling the unit, etc. Now, if someone could please explain to me how to upload images (last time I tried it didn’t work) onto a post, I would show you the results of my experiment. For now, this description will have to suffice, I guess. ![]()
A few months ago I bought a Roland TR8 and absolutely couldn’t stand the green trim around the edge. So, I looked up using enamel model paint, acrylics, and a few others, but brush strokes troubled me, and spray paint / airbrushing seemed like too much of a hassle, not to mention that sending away to have it repainted by someone else was out of the question. Doing it myself I wanted to avoid leaving brush marks, and since I’m not a painter, I wanted to avoid painting with a brush as much as possible.
I use metals and plastics when I work on my art, and a few years ago I decided to use a paint marker recommended to me by a friend to sign my work, and it worked like a charm on the Roland TR8. The “Painty FX” xylene-free paint marker by ZIG did the trick. To rid the TR8 of the green trim, I used painter’s tape to frame the edge and I ran three long strokes on each side, and that was enough. If you need to “erase” your work you can soak part of a paper towel in paint thinner and remove it. Note that I only did this on a small section of plastic on the bottom when I tested its effectiveness, and I’m not sure if thinner would remove other factory paint elements if it makes contact (silkscreened words, lines, etc.). In the end, it took maybe all of 30 minutes to complete, and the TR8 looks fantastic.
So, I hope that helps anyone looking to do similar work. This is not an advertisement, nor am I affiliated with ZIG in any way. I just found a good option for customization and wanted to share it with all of you. My Roland TR8 now has black trim along the edges, and it looks sharp. the only green highlights are around the scatter section. Personally, I love green, but Roland’s implementation was just not to my liking.
