How to expand the Sub 37 capabilities even more?

I just got my first analogue synth, a Sub 37, and love it. I am already look at way ways to continue to grow my sound producing capabilities by getting more VCO and LFOs to add sound and control to what I can do with the Sub 37. Looking at options like some of moogerfoogers, the CP-251, the Mother-32, and then Werkstatt, its seems to me that the next logical choice for the money to get the best customizability is the Werkstatt. Does that seems right or should it really just be considered for “education” use and not high-level music making? It gives me a VCO, LFO, a lot of CV outs, and the ability yo make custom mods w my basic electronics abilities and at a lower price range than something like the Mother-32 that I can’t easily modify.

The first hurdle with the werkstatt is to figure the best way to hook it up with the 37 given the werkstatt’s lack of midi and the sub 37s lack of cv out.

If you want Moog and don’t need to be able to hack/patch, then the Minitaur may be worth considering in the mix too as that has midi and can be poly-chained with the sub 37:

You can now “Poly Chain” your Minitaur in combination with up to 16 other Moog synths (Little or Slim Phatty; soon to include Sub Phatty and Sub 37 as well). Just send the same MIDI notes to all units, set the Poly Voice Max equal to the total number of synths in the chain, and set each synth to a unique Poly Voice Number. Poly Voice Number = OFF disables poly mode, and is the default setting.
• Program Change Send/Recv: ON by default; you can disable sending or receiving Program Change messages if needed.

your consumer choices are yours

if you go CV: get a CP-251 & the Moogerfoogers → feed CP-251 CV out to Sub37 & Moogerfoogers, run audio from Sub37 to Moogerfoogers (or use effects on an aux send/return)

if you go midi: get a Mother32 → sequence the Mother32 Midi In with the Sub37 Midi Out, run audio from M32 to Sub37 ext audio in

Hmm, thanks to both responses. So it seems like the most overall versitle combination for what I’m thinking of would be a Minitar (or a used Slim Phatty) so I can do either the poly chain or sequence it and feed it back into the Sub37 to be further processed (which I hadn’t thought of). I could go the CP-251 & Moogerfoogers route but the price for collecting those would add up fast.

I bought two minitaurs soldiers to use as polychain voices for my sub37. When I’m not playing chords, I run them as a bass stereo pair.

I thought you actually bought two Minitaurs to show off your awesome woodworking skills?!? The fact that they make fabulous bass was just a bonus

You did get me psyched - going to make a set of Zebrawood side panels for my (single) Minitaur over the holidays…

Nice! I love that MF Drive too. I don’t ever use my Roland keyboard now without it. Even if I am just using piano sounds with no distortion it gives such a nice warmth to the digital sound.

I wish I could Polychain it somehow with the SubPhatty  after that a nice pedal (Moog or Strymon BigSky)…

If the Minituars only have a midi in and no midi thru, how do you polychain more than 1 Minitaur? You are getting 3-note polyphony w the two minitaurs and one sub 37, right?

Wouldn’t a midi-thru box would solve that easily enough eg:

Midiman Thru 3x8 midi hub

Ahhh, that makes sense. I wasn’t aware of midi thru boxes. From the description on that website it seems like it would be better to use a thru box regardless of if what you are using has thru ports because it prevents delay or data deterioration that can result from too much daisy chaining.

this

there’s also this with USB for direct DAW integration

Wow, didn’t know about Midi thru boxes either…and I love the Motu Ultralites I already have…may look into that.

So pumped to see the topic on the forum.
Just got a Minitaur this weekend (while vacationing in Ashville) from the Moog store.
There lead repair tech suggested the Minitaur to add to my Sub 37 as the most effective and useful combination for the Sub37.

I have question though…will I be able to use the Minitaur as a drone type of oscillator (like OSC 3 on the voyager) or will I only be able to set it up to follow the root note of my Sub37?

I’m assuming that I’ll be able to run all 4 oscillators slightly detuned (plus the sub OSC) to make a super phat saw base…which is one of the main reasons I snagged the Minitaur.

Another question too, for those that have done this…how to the oscillators and filters compare on the 2?

I am on the process of selling my SubPhatty + MFB Tanzbar and replace them with a Mother32 + Strymon BigSky…for a better and wider integration with my Sub37.

From the research I’ve done on the Minitaur there are probably a couple ways to do that drone: 1) leave to minitar unconnected to the Sub37 and use the Minitaur as a drone, 2) put the Sub37 in duo mode with no note priority on the 2nd VCO so that it becomes the drone and then polychain it to Minitaur to have duophony + drone (in theory that should work but you’d have to try it), or 3) polychain the two and physically play the drone on the left hand.

You could get a Sub Phatty. I believe it will support polychain soon and it’s a nice addition even without it. Or get a second Sub 37.
