HELP! VOYAGER 'CRASHING'

Hey there

My Voyager is currently doing some ‘crashing’. It’s been doing this for the past hour or so… I have a midi sequence from Ableton running into it from my M-Audio Fast Track Pro.

At irregular intervals and on different presets the Moog stops responding to changes on their dials/switches/menu buttons, the screen freezes and then the oscillator slowly falls down from it’s current pitch all the way down beyond the realm of the brown note. A quick power on/off fixes the problem temporarily but then it keeps occuring intermittently. Sometimes there’s about 10 seconds between power on and fault, but as I write there’s been about 5 minutes of no fault.

Help!

OS reboot?

Are there any engineers from Asheville on this forum? I’d love an answer from the experts!

Thank you

Ryan

Does the still happen you disconnect from ableton?

Hi Ryan,
davydka wrote the right question:

Please remove the MIDI In cable and tell us what will happen without MIDI.
Have fun,
Rudi

thanks guys, i will check.

if ableton is the culprit, what exactly is it doing/sending to the moog to cause this? what can i do to prevent this?

thanks!

I guess it’s a problem of your Voyager. If really Ableton ist the reason then I have a problem (cause I have to find the bug in the software :frowning: )

My guess: you got some serious MIDI loop going on. And this might overload the MIDI in buffer.
If you could record the MIDI data that went in to the Voyager in the last few seconds before the crash, RUDI could check if the problem is caused by the MIDI loop or by some strange MIDI data created by the Ableton or some other gear’s data send also on the very same channel.

I have seen non Moog synths sending out ASCII data during booting and causing trouble to other synths.

Please tell us what Voyager software version you are using.
And try to recreate the thing with as less as possible cables and instruments.

…so i left the voyager running for a few hours with no midi plugged in and the crash did not happen.

the set-up is quite simple already - mac w/ableton usb - soundcard. midi out to moog Ch2, midi in from moog ch1. at the time when this was happening i had a max for live patch called ‘rozzer step sequencer’ sending a sequence to the moog. i checked all the settings in ableton to make sure there were no midi loops.

it hasn’t happened since, but it i guess it must have had something to do with the max sequence… weird!

btw rudi - are there any plans for the new OS to allow easier access to the Filter Pole Selection?

thanks for the help

No

… noted!

i would like to make a formal ‘feature request’ to have this made more easily available - either as short cut on the front panel or to be selected remotely via CC/PGM message.

it is such a powerful feature for sound modification it seems sort of crazy it’s buried in an obscure corner of the menu, although i’m sure you all have your reasons for putting it where it is

+1

A cool thing would be to replace the backlight knob of a Select Edition with a filter pole switch!
Keyboard Trigger Mode should get a hardware switch also.

I doubt its simple midi from live. I suspect its the max add on.

Hey,

My moog is crashing too. I’ve got a Moog Voyager Rack.
sometimes I can use it the whole day, sometimes it’s crashing every 10 secs..

The screen starts flickering first, after that the sounds fade out, piching down, and it reboots…
sometimes it takes a while to reboot too.. is there anyone out there who knows what this could be..?
