but never really gotten what I wanted, I’m not sure where to start with the LP. I usually just mess about with existing presets and build something new for myself. but i’d like to better understand how the above stereolab sound is built and how to emulate it on the LP.
Sorry I don’t have the LP with me now so I can’t really test this nor make you an example preset, but a quick comparison with the soundfiles tells me that you’re using way too little resonance.
On the LP, one theoretical approach might be:
turn off all distortion from the filter
set resonance to somewhere like 80% - 100%
use the LFO for manipulating the cutoff (not sure which waveform would be most appropriate, experiment)
you need to adjust the “base” cutoff freq to the right position, and LFO mod depth must be set right as well
Triangle LFO to cutoff frequency, mod to LFO amount, and turn the modwheel up.
Besides that, get the speed of the LFO right to your needs. And play with the amount of filter slopes in the menu; 18/12/6 db/octave might give the edge you need.
