my preset problem seems related to hardware being reported as disconnected even when it is connected via usb

Here is a suggestion: Perhaps to try deleting the editor preferences and closing/reopening the editor?
to do this, open the Editor and go to the Librarian page… right-click on one of the preset folders and choose “Reveal In Finder”…
then in the Finder window that appears, go “up” a directory or two, to the folder called Sub 37 (in the Moog Music Inc. folder, within Application Support).
In this Sub 37 folder, there are some preferences files, Sub 37 Editor.prefs and Sub 37 Editor Standalone.prefs — delete these files.
Close and re-open the editor and the files will be re-created. See if this helps with the Hardware Disconnected problem.
