freq box as vocoder

has anybody tried singing through the freq box yet? i would imagine that its just complete chaos. does anyone have a sound clip of that?

Tried it a while back. The results were disappointing when compared to using a guitar or another synth. It’s definately not like a vocoder - more like running your voice through a distortion pedal, IMO, but without the cool result (for example, the FB won’t give you the distorted vocal treatment of Nine Inch Nails).

there’s an mp3 in an old thread somewhere on this forum.
somebody tried it for me.
but indeed as gregae said.
without sync is nicer btw.

:frowning: aww so no acid gargling Al Jourgenson vocals or daft punk robot voice stuff

Are you kidding me? The freqbox w/ voice is sick - especially if you’re singing sustaining pitches. If you turn off the Sync and turn up the FM Amount, that’s where it’s at. FM is super sensitive to timbre of the input as well as the dynamics of the input. I prefer using the triangle wave when using FM for easier to hear sidebands.

Turning on the Sync + FM is also good fun - you need to move the frequency control around when you do this so it’s not a “static” timbre and you need to keep the FB’s VCO higher in pitch than what you’re singing. An expression pedal plgged into the Freq input helps with that. The trick to using the FreqBox in general when using Sync is to play with the Frequency of the VCO while stuff is going through it to vary the timbre. Otherwise you get a single unchanging timbre.

Also sick with the voice is the MuRF - try running a melismatic vocal line through it and you’ll see what I mean…

I only had limited and tried it briefly a awhile ago, while the results weren’t exactly what I expected they were interesting . It’s not like a vocoder effects but more of a lo- fi kind of distorted sound. I keep meaning to spend some more time with vocals though it along with a few other MF’s and see what happens. Maybe this weekend. . Cool idea Steve on the MuRF and vocals… hmmmm MuRF and FreqBox, with … there’s no end, throw in the CP251,or soon the MP201 and you have a real party going on

Don’t leave out the MF Ring Mod. One of my favorite vocal destructor boxes. Great in combo with a phaser.

:open_mouth: wow that was way cooler than what i expected

Ala Karn Evil 9, yup the Ring Mod is also a lot of fun on vocals

ZBQ allso has a lot of freqbox-samples over here>>http://earsmack.com/stuff/freqbox/
