Hi,
i have been interested in theremins my whole life and now for my final year project at university i have decided to build one! my problem is its not sufficient enough to just build one as this project is going to take the best part of a year! i need ideas on how to progress the theremin it can have been done before!
i was thinking build one then use and aduano board and hook it up to max/msp (and logic maybe) and use it to control effects e.g the cut off on a filter? is this realistic? id like peoples general thoughts and help?
tht would be amazing
Thanks alot,
ross
Hi Ross,
Building a basic theremin would certainly not take a year - what would be more of a challenge would be to design and build a commercially viable theremin, and to be able to demonstrate that it can be played melodically as well as for sound effects.
Important factors are timbre, range - five octaves minimum - and “linearity” - the pitch field response should be such that the same hand movement will change the pitch by the same interval anywhere in the playable range.
You can do a lot of fun stuff with a theremin and max. Here are a couple of examples.
