Filter observation

On the Minimoog model D the filter Cutoff knob can open the filter all the way–even with the Contour knob at zero. Or to put it another way, with Cutoff on 10, Contour has no effect. I tried out the LP SE and found that the CUTOFF control by itself cannot open the filter all the way. You have to add EGR AMNT to fully open the filter.

Also, when the filter is fully open (by turning up Egr Amnt all the way) the Cutoff cannot close the filter enough. It’s too open, IMO. My conclusion is that the Cutoff control should have greater range. I realize doing so would necessarily make for narrower calibration and change the sound of existing presets.

I wanted to hear an ADSR filter sweep that went from very closed to fully open and back, so I set Cutoff to zero, EGR AMNT to max, with appropriate ADSR settings. When I played a note it started with the filter much too open, IMO. I realize this is a design choice, but I wish the filter cutoff under ADSR control would have greater range.

Even though this is a Voyager topic, Cube1966’s posts describe what I’m talking about on the LP:

Also, kybernaut_01 makes a similiar point here:

This is something ive wanted on both the Lp and voyager for a long time. Im not sure why the new moog filters range is voiced this way but i really hope that moog can advise how to calibrate the filter to sound more like the moogs of old at some point! We need brightness and lowness!

The only reason i hang on to my source is because it is much brighter up top and lower in the lows!

Somehow I’ve got the feeling, that the LP will never sound like its vintage siblings (be it the Soruce, the Mini or the Prodigy). There is certainly more going on than just opening up the filter wider…

I’m at a point where I consider selling my LP for a vintage moog…

:frowning:

nah, dont do that. the LP is so much better in every other respect apart from the fllter brightness things which im sure will be improved in future updates…

dont forget the moogs of old bring with them their own particular quirks…

Are you guys refering to the LP TE or LP SE?

I had an LP Tribute for a few weeks and changed it for a new SE, as my Tribute was a shop demo in poor condition - it had to go back

But since i collected the SE, I actually prefer it  , it’s a little quieter with the filter cutoff all the way down, no more interference like the TE, and its sounds a little brighter too.

Got some strong bass tones, so it’s a keeper for me, and it cuts very well on mixes. I use it with my Andromeda and OB Matrix synths.
