Ever Sample Your Phatty?

I’m hoping to take the show on the road and lighten the load a bit. Has anyone who uses their Phatty (or Minitaur) as a sound module successfully sampled it and ended up happy with the results? Right now I’m using an Electribe ESX which I like in general but I’m afraid isn’t doing a great job preserving the openness of the Moog sound. I don’t imagine any recording will be as good as live but is anyone getting close and happy with the results?
Thanks,

i sampled my sub phatty to get polyphony.

what i found was interesting and unexpected. the sub phatty has so much movement its hard to sample while retaining the moogness. its hard to explain, i guess theres so much unexpected movement that adds to the timbre that it’s hard to sample well.

i used abletons simpler. sampled an extended note and set the loop zone to what ‘looked’ like a recurring waveform.

as far as polyphony goes. there is new territory there. some great sounds. but you lose so much waveform movement it’s hard to justify doing without the hardware.

i was going to create a video- but this guy did a similar thing already.

I’m sampling synths in general to ABleton Live set when I need different sounds from one synth.
For example, I sometimes sample additional basslines or sequences.
I usually sample the whole take/part as loop.
I also sampled some Little Phatty’s bass sounds as separate notes and use them in my Nord Stage 2.

But I always leave main parts for real synths.
When mixing track in a studio — i’m not pre-tracking the synth to audio track - I’m mixing the real synth instead.
When playing live - I carry the Minitaur and Sub Phatty and Nord Stage and use MIDI sequences from Ableton Live for them, and of course play live parts by myself.

What a neat idea for polyphony.

Tagirov, I’d love to hear your music.

I have a dream of fitting the whole shebang in a DJ booth but you really can’t get the vitality you get used to with Moog instruments.

Thanks for chiming in,

loopmasters released a sample cd titled “Loopmasters Moog Taurus MK.1 Bass Expander”. it’s pretty good.

I sample the slim phatty all the time into my MPC 5000 to create keygroups that allow me to play polyphonic sp patches. I do this with the DSI mopho too… so cool like having a prophet 8 living in the MPC.

Sampling analog synths can be tricky. It depends a lot on the patch. If there’s a lot of modulation going on then the sampled version is usually less appealing in my experience. I’ve successfully sampled simple waveforms from my MOTM 300 oscillators and used these with the native sampler filters and modulation and that works very well. I did sample a few patches on my Sub with filter but really no modulation other than the envelopes. YMMV tho…

Yes, in fact I made two Kontakt instruments created from my Slim…PWM88 and OctaveSaws88… They both sound just like my Moog, but I cheated by using Sample Robot for 3-layer, 88 key patches! I took 10 sec samples , but ended up looping them all by hand(eye & ear, really) for those times when you really want that chord to hold for 8 bars!

If anyone wants them, shoot me a PM and I’ll get them over to you!!!

Next, I’m sampling this:
