Effects - Pre vs. post filter

Hi all

I just thought I’d ask a general question on effects processing. Having recently bought a set of Eventide effects processor pedals, I’m experimenting with placing them at different points in my audio chain. I have a Voyager, so have inserted them with the provided loop insert point between mixer and filters to hear what happens there. I’ve also tried placing them at the line output stage prior to my audio interface.

What do most people find most interesting and effective? In technical terms, what’s the difference? Obviously the filters are getting to munch on pre-altered sound in scenario one - so the applied effect itself from the pedals is being processed too. Where would people, in general, utilise it this way and what would they be trying to achieve versus applying the effects post output?

Hi, Im not sure what interface but I beleive they would be best placed after or in the interface somehow, in an fx loop if possible.
That is to say digital fx added into the already converted digital signal.
I find FX placed prior seem to get a bit squirley at times, depending on the effect and instrument too although sometimes it can be quite interesting I find it difficult to control.
I think that the original signal would convert better with less information keeping it clean.
once converted then the fx would be easier to control.
Eventide probably has info on different set ups .

I use the pre-filter insert point with a stereo Y cable, feeding back into the audio in, ALL the time, with my ext in set at 75%- The rare times I use effects, I use them post filter- In my opinion, the pre filter insert is better with tonal fx like octavers or harmonizers…

Use an aux bus to mix in the effected signal with the pure analog signal from the voyager. Especially if you’re just playing live or recording to tape. If you’re recording digital, doesn’t really matter unless your converters are better than the ones on the eventide (though effects converters are usually low grade), then do the same thing, use an analog aux bus or the one in DAW (which in case you will have to run an analog in/out from the DAW to the effect and back).
