audio from = audio interface that sub 37 is connected to
add sub 37 editor after the external instrument device
Changing a preset in the editor librarian by double clicking the preset in the rightmost pane creates a midi loop:

it does this until I change the “midi to” in ableton’s external instrument device to something else (or de-activating the external instrument) and play a note on the sub 37 - then it clears to the expected 4 events per note press (as ableton’s external instrument device sends the incoming midi to the target external midi hardware - which happens to be the same device in this case):
