Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant

Does anyone have an idea on how to program the patch Chick Corea used on the song “the duel of the jester and the tyrant” from the album the Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever?

Judging from a video on youtube, he used an ARP Odyssey for the synth parts in that song. Sounds like a standard pulse or pulse+saw patch with portamento. It should be easy to approximate on most synths.

He does use an ARP on that song for the intro. However, on the album the song is from, he definetly uses a Moog for a solo. The pitch bends are a tell all. I am curious about that synth patch. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I listened to a studio version of the song (I hadn’t heard it in years), and now I know what sound you’re talking about. I found this online:

Although it’s a generic description of actual Minimoog settings (for setting up Minimoog softsynths, no less), it would probably get you pretty close to Chick’s patch in this song. Please let us know how it turns out…

Okay, I pulled my Minimoog out of the closet and tried to get an approximation of Corea’s lead patch. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s in the ballpark:

Sorry for the bad picture quality. The switch for keyboard control 2 is on. Osc 1 and 2 are switched to 8’ and tuned as close as you can get them with the osc 2 tuning knob. The osc modulation switch should be set to on.

This isn’t a perfect clone of the sound. I just tried to dial it in from memory when I listened to the song earlier today. Hopefully you can take from there, and tweak it to your liking (are you using a Minimoog?).

Thanks for the pictures and info Goom. I am using a LP Tribute and a Slim Phatty.

Hi, I’m new to Moog, and synths in general. Recently bought a LIttle Phatty, and am keen to get Chick’s ‘Duel’ lead sound, but don’t know where to begin - any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Andrew
