anyone know if the cv outs on an arp solus will work to slave an old moog? all help would be appreciated!
They share the 1v/oct scaling
But the pitch at zero volts is different
On a minimoog, zero volts is low F
On ARPs, zero volts is low C
Easy to correct with a CP251
Moog is S-trig, Arp is V-trig.
Depends on what old Moog you want to control. Most Moogs will need a special cable to convert the gate from the Arp into an S-trigger, and you will need to convert the minature Tini-jax to 1/4". A Rogue or a Taurus 2 do have a V-trig input.
The Solus makes for a very nice 1 volt/per octave controller. Arp got it right on the Solus and Mk 3 Odyssey. The Solus will output both a gate and trigger pulse, along with a pitch CV that includes (sums) all voltages on the left-hand section. This includes the CV transpose of +/- 1 octave, the LFO modulation, portamento, pitch bend (+/- 1 octave), and even the fine tune slider. A really nice synthesizer that can double as a nice modular CV keyboard. Just wish it had those PPC pads on the Oddy Mk3. I’m using one right now to control my Minimoog, works great, plays in tune and it has that Arp portamento. ![]()

All those voltages are summed at the pitch CV out!
man o man. my guitar player is looking to trade his m audio prokeys 88 for one. he was originally looking for an mg1 and i may have to try to trade him my mg1 for his solus! this thing seems like a very capable board.
Well, that’s a tough call. Both have advantages over the other. The MG-1 has a poly section, noise and sample and hold. The Solus has a better defined ADSR, pulse width modulation, and like the Rogue, the envelope can push the second oscillator in sync mode. The Solus is a heavyweight solo instrument, but may lack the crazy sounds you can get on an MG-1. You won’t need a case for the Solus, tough choice. Here is the patch sheet for the Solus to compare features. I think the MG-1 is a better choice for an all-round synthesizer.
Solus Patch Sheet
Hello,
If its an even trade, you could give him the MG-1, take the Solus, and use
a bit of extra cash to pick up a Phatty ot Performer Vger.
There isn’t a more different, but complementary combo of monos
than most of the Moogs and an Arp.
A Solus and a Phatty/Vger are both 1v/oct, so it would settle any interface issue.
The filter differences are often discussed (and obvious), but one of the most unappreciated (and subtle) differences is the vibratos.
Moog, Sequential, and Korg used a triangle wave for their vibrato.
Arp, (also Yamaha CS, the older Roland, and the SEM iirc) use a sine wave for vibrato (its actually a triangle wave thats diode-smoothed).
Its a less intense, but smoother type of effect, and if you have two machines with the different types of vibrato (and filtering), you have
a wide variety of sounds covered with a minimal number of pieces.
To appreciate the differences between Arp’s vibrato and Moog’s, you
can check out those who have used both for leads at the same time in their setups.
Chick Corea used both, Peter Robinson (Stanley Clarke, Brand X), George Duke. If you have the opportunity to have two vastly
different (but complementary) machines to work with, you may want to consider it.

for a bit of background the synth gear i have going into this hypothetical trade would be a moog prodigy (no cv’s currently in shop). mf102,107,105b and cp251. if this changes any of the above, and thanks everyone for the feedback!
CZ, thanks for that patch sheet, really looks like an interesting synth. i always said i would never get rid of my mg1 as it was my first. just getting a bit of gear lust over this solus, with its cv’s, asdr, inst input, etc. looks like a sweet machine. suggested sales price these days?
thanks again guys/gals
