Do you make Noise with your Moog?

Yeah, modulation can sound a lot like a ring modulator, but there’s still many differences.
I’m just saying that it can be a bit confusing to those that don’t know the difference when such terms are used interchangeably.
One small example is where a ring modulator can sometimes be used as a VCA, whereas modulating a filter or osc can’t.
Another is where a ring mod can be used as a frequency doubler if the inputs are both sine waves.
None of this is terribly important if one is just having fun, but it helps to know the theory behind the two so that each technique or module can be used to its fullest advantage.

Thanks

What I should have said, rather than use the term “Ring Modulation” I should have said that I dialed the LFO “Well into the audio range”.

I always gig with my Moogs, but lately I’ve just been letting my band mates use them.

I use to use the ring modulator live just to make noise, sometimes use it for some trem. My bass player uses my mf101 and thats much just for funky awesomeness. My keyboard player uses my ARP Solus and I have him hook up my control processor to use with it since the Solus lacks noise or sample & hold. The noise is used for atmospheric effects and the s&h is for computer glitchy fun.

I’m interested in making noise with my Voyager. When I first got it, I used the “Mod Wheel Howler” patch a lot with my friend’s band. She was going for the imagery of walking through the woods with menacing noises - a Grimm Bros. dark fairy tale kind of feel.

I still have a lot to learn though and am looking forward to more study/exploration with the help of the Voyager Training DVD.

Well the Training DVD isn’t exactly what you are thinking. It is more like a Voyager clinic. It will go over the parts of the Voyager that you may be unsure exactly what it does, but no intermediate or advanced programming tips in there.

If you want to try something, go into the menu and change the filter pole setting!

I’m not an advanced or even intermediate level synth programmer, so the DVD is just fine for me. Thanks to the DVD, I’ve found new (for me!!!) ways to get unexpected noises out of stock Voyager patches, by playing with a variety of settings.

THeres also a MoogerFooger DVD that I believe some of it is posted on Moog’s youtube channel. It will help you learn about voltages and things that you will be able to apply to the Voyager.

Good luck!

Don’t hesitate to post any questions you might have, there are alot of people here who are very knowledgable and eager to help.
