This is me using my Eurorack modular with many pieces involved as is the case with Eurorack. The whole thing is housed in my MonoRocket Lexington. But no Moog in this video.
This being the case (no pun intended) I’ve been wondering how many people use their Moog gear for Noise generation as musical expression. I’m considering not using my Lexington for some shows because I’d love to do the Voyager/Fooger run, which creates great noise and fun, a go at the next noise show as all Moog.
I haven’t gigged with any Moogs but I have recorded what may be considered as “noise”. DOn’t know if that counts but thought Id mention it because some of my partners are interested in expaning in that area, and they DO noise shows.
I’ve done and do noise with my foogers and micromoog. If you go to my myspace for vacancyofdisco I believe I still have some examples up there, its been awhile since I looked at it. Otherwise tonight or tomarrow ill post some stuff when I get home.
I’m using a Moog Liberation for some free improv/ free jazz type stuff I’m involved in, bass drones, efx, white noise sound, that kind of stuff. Great fun to use, and looks good too!
I’ve done noise-type improv w/ my Voyager; lots of fun! It’s great in conjunction w/ tiny synths or toys: Bleep Labs Thingamagoop, Flower Electronics Little Boy Blue, Nintendo Electrplankton, etc. Check out Hal McGee’s stuff for Voyager RME + other weirdness (there’s a great deal of his stuff @ archive.org). My band Polymos just put out a recording that has lots of noisy/drone Voyager (and Hartmann Neuron + Wiard 300 series Wogglebug) along with electric banjos (through effects) and basses. It’s on iTunes if you want some previews… http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bright-birds-feed-right/id419652702
cant figure out how to post song up here but if you click on the myspace link in my signature the song “destroying planets” is all moog just a single track sequence of micromoog and lots of lfos going everywhere. i think its quite noisy
Not all Moog, but here is a live recording of me goofing off in the studio this morning for a few minutes. Moogs in there are the Voyager, Little Phatty/MF104SD and a Model D along with guest appearences from a few other synths. A Lexicon MX200 was alos used for reverb and aditonal delay.
I used a S&H and triangle wave on some noise from the Voyager, ran that through the 103, set to a fast hi speed lfo (approx 3 o’ clock well into ring modulation). I used the keyboard voltage to “play” the rate of the lfo gnerating notes and different sounds.
Just a note that modulation (AM, FM, etc) is not ring modulation.
It can sound like it sometimes, but it’s not the same thing.
Maybe you meant the Moogerfooger 102 pedal, not 103?
I was more referring to the effect of having the LFO get so high in frequency that it produces what sounds exactly like the sum and differences (alternate sidebands raising and lowering proportionally opposite eachother is the best way I can describe it.) of Ring Modulation.
The 103 does this when the LFO gets that high, and like the 102, high and low pitches become indistinguishable and clangorous.
Similarly, I got the same effect with the Voyager when I tuned the Oscs at an interval, the second osc at a much higher frequency, which I thought was just the beat frequency or cycling so fast that it had the same effect. It was a few octaves and several semitones higher but again, as I increased the pitch I heard the sum and differences.
The freqbox does the same when it is pushed beyond its useful range. Whether or not that’s called RM is another story.
