Just recently picked up a Slim Phatty, which I love. I’d like to now buy a dedicated delay unit for it. I realize that the Moogerfooger analog delay is a great piece of gear, but I’d like to spend a little less money than that. I’d also prefer a rack mountable unit, preferably only 1 or 2 rack unit spaces worth. Would you folks recommend finding something analog and vintage on eBay? Or venture into the realm of digital delays? I personally prefer the idea of an analog delay for an analog synth, but am not sure how significant that is. Perhaps there’s a great 1u space digital delay that really has a nice warm analog sound and works great for a synth like the SP. My budget is $300 or less.
A few units I’ve been looking at on eBay are the DOD R880, and an Electra EP200. On the digital side, the Roland SDE 1000 or perhaps the Roland RE-3 Space Echo.
One additional note: I would love to find a unit that could accept more than one input, so that I might run another monophonic synth through it along with the SP.
obviously go with the minifooger. And you can get a splitter or a minimixer with aux to use the delay on more than one source. If not the minifooger delay, some other bbd is crucial for that analog sound.
Yes go for minimooger! I believe that is actually the same as 104 but without all the extras.
I have my 104z for 8 years now and is far best delay I ever played.
I would love to have 104M but for me, this is also to much for my valet.
I have MF-104 and also BOSS RE-20 Space Echo and I like the RE-20 more.
It sounds brighter, it’s has stereo multi-tap delay mode and has additional reverb, it’s compact, It doesn’t need the external power adaptor - only 6 AA batteries.
I used both delays on stage and have chosen the RE20.
For multi-input scheme with more than one synth I recommend you to get a compact mixer with aux send/return (like Yamaha MG10) or without it (like Mackie 402VLZ4 or Alesis MultiMix 4), you may just plug mixer’s stereo output to delay unit’s input and use the delay unit in ‘direct’ mode (in case of BOSS RE-20).
MF-104 is fun, but has specific sound which is no good in some cases, imho.
There was a 104m on ebay last night for less than $500. When the 104m was released the price of the 104z dropped considerably on the used market. I know a guy who got one for maybe around 450. The great thing is that as long as it is good cosmetically, Moog can still service it for you and get it back up to specs.
Someone recommended the EHX Deluxe Memory Boy, wich I have. It’s a great delay pedal and sounds good with my synths.

If I could choose, I’d get the EHX Memory Man instead, but I had a limited budget at the time…
I highly recommend the ADA S1000 delay. It is a late 80s digital delay that has a lovely overdrive well before you clip the digital stages. I’m sure it’s something like 12-bit 32kHz, but it doesn’t sound grungy unless you A: overdrive it on purpose or B: run the input very low with the output hot so as to effectively reduce the bit depth.
If you really want analog, one of the very best rack units I’ve had the pleasure of hearing(and owning!) is the Ibanez AD230. 2U, does lush flange and chorus, and as a bonus has a mic pre built in!!! Sounds incredible, and overdrives REALLY well!
Thanks for all the input! I did pick up a DeltaLab Effectron II for cheap and quite like the way it sounds. Will check some of these other recommendations from all of you as well.
