Delay, Freq and Cp251 Reviews

Over the last 2 weeks I became the owner of the 104z, the 107, and the CP251.
Here is my personal take on them.

104z
When I first got the delay pedal I thought to myself, “Oh man I can’t believe that I spent so much money on this.” (I have one of those roland Cube 30 Bass amps that I can have delay flange, amp modeling, reverb and chorus) When I plugged my theremin into the delay and cranked up the feedback with the VOlume Pedal though on a short delay and heard the Vintage Reverb effect…My smile was so big!
I knew that I wouls be using the delay for vocals and for the Sax, and even for the Fender Rhodes. When I inserted the Ring Mod into the effects loop and hit a harmonic on the guitar, it sounded like I had a set of huge gongs someone was beating on inside a cave.
In summary: This pedal will redefine my playing style and it already has in ways that I choose as of yet not to reveal, as it has revolutionized the way that I look at certian instruments.

Freq Box:
Just yesterday I opened the Boxes on the Freq and the Cp251. I had to pay a bill so I wasn’t able to get the Moog 921B Oscillator Module that I had originally wanted, so I got the Freq Box on impulse. Initially I wondered if I had made the right decision, because I was debating on whether or not I was going to get the Phaser. It was the VCO and the Envelope follower sold me on the Freq Box rather than the price.
Note: I have a tendancy to impulse buy certian things, and then temporarily regret it lol so this is not reflective of Moog or the quality of their products. (I woudln’t buy something I didn’t know would be useful)
Im not too much of a guitar oriented player…I play guitar, mostly classical style, no effects, so the Freq isn’t really goign to help me out there, but As a Bass player I know I will use the Freq to fatten up my tone. THe main reason why I purchased the Freq was to give me a second Osc for my MicroMoog, which it does wonderfully, and this alone is worth having the Freq Box in my setup.
SUmmary: Freq Box performs exactly as expected and will grow on me as I begin incorporating it into my recordings. I haven’t tried it with any other instruments yet and this will be a project for the next few weeks.

Cp-251:
I still haven’t quite realized the power of this thing. For what its worth, Using the Mixer as an audio distributor has not given me the noise that some have complained about. (At least I haven’t noticed anything yet)
I bought the cp251 solely for the purpose of making my MoogerFoogers and my expression pedal Compatible with my MicroMoog. It is a pretty instrument, definately needing a dust cover (lots of jacks to spray out) and the pots are not cheap feeling as some other coimpanies units are. T

Note: As i pointed out in another thread, I never thought that I would ever like the MoogerFOoger line because I was under the assumption that thewse products were built fora guitar oriented market as stompboxes. After I bought the Ring Modulator I didn’t feel that I had a use for the CP251 but after spending so many hours in the bathroom with my face buried in Moog Manuals and sales literature…I have some to realize that the Cp-251 will be one of my most relied upon and CHerished Foogers.

Summary: I could not have made a better purchase of musical products, despite my initial reactions. All of these FOogers will be a part of the Modular system that I am building and because of their flexibillity of use, they saved me hundreds and hundreds of dollars on certian modules dedicated to merely 1 function liek say the envelope follower or multiple and attenuation and mixer modules. So I woudl advise anyone especially Multi-Instrumentalists to look to the MoogerFOoger line of products in expanding their ever widening arsenal of sounds because of their individuality as well as their collective efforts in sound design.

Although Im preaching to the choir here on the Moog Forum about how awesome these units are, perhaps there are people out there considering but hesitating on these units.

WHat Im goig to do very soon is Im going to demonstrate these Foogers with lots of different instruments with an emphisis on the subtleties instead of their extremes. I will post in the future containing youtube links and hopefully they will be of interest to you all.

Eric

Thanks, MOOG for your products.

Eric,

Congrats on the excitement - you definitely have some nice stuff to play with and the great thing about the MFs is that the possibilities are very far-reaching. Months and years later I think you will find new ways of integrating them and getting new sounds.

Looking forward to your demos…

I have had the ring Mod for over 2 years already and I think i have done something that I wonder if anyone else had thought of yet.

And that would be?

Well 2 things…

First I “Turned the Rhodes into a sequencer” by playing a repeating pattern through the 102 (lo freq tremelo) thus slowing the attack of every note in the pattern. THis created a whistling sound that, to me, was remenescant of a doepfer sequence. Its a medium paced pattern but each note fades in and it masks the Rhodes. This can probably be done with any instrument with an otherwise fast attack.

I actually didn’t intend to do it, I was kindof suprised when i realized what was goign on with the attack. With the other sequencer going as the lead track, it just sounds like 2 sequencers.

Also, using the delay pedal, staying mainly in the zero beat of the theremin and playing it percussively with the feedback on 4, I “turned the theremin into a drum machine.”

Im just excited and inspired with the aquisition of the new toys.

EricK
