Control panel faults?

Just bought a Little Phatty stage 1 second-hand. When switched on, it switches from preset active to panel active without me touching any other control. The value knob also only works when pressed and doesn’t change any values when rotated. Is there a setting on the LP that would explain why this is happening, or is this part of the control panel probably just faulty?

Value knob fails easily when used heavily. When fixed at the factory they will reinforce it with a washer if requested.

Don’t know about the other thing. Any other controls jumping around?

Thanks for the reply, that’s v helpful. Think it may be heavy use then - glide on/off button doesn’t work effectively - but apart from that and the present/panel switching, the rest seems ok

Hey there,

The issue involving the preset button turning to panel active by itself is pretty common - it means that some parameter values have changed by themselves as if you turned a knob. You can check if this is in-fact happening by navigating in the menu to “PRECISION MODE” before and after the preset button turns yellow (panel active) - you can reset the patch to preset by switching back and forwards between patches. Here you can press each button on the front panel and get a reading of its exact value at the current time. Note the values down before and after and you will see if any parameters have drifted by themselves. My apologies if your other problem (value knob not working right) prevents you from easily following these instructions.

Normally it’s due to a grounding issue such as not using 3-pronged power leads (the lower, third prong is ground), or other gear in your audio chain trying to ground through the phatty (called a ground loop) - the latter problem can normally be solved by using a ground loop isolator or passive DI box.

However, I am a sufferer of this problem with my two Slim Phattys (but not my Little Phatty Stage II) and none of the above seems to have caused my problem. In my case, the problem occurs with no leads plugged into the unit (so no audio cables can create a ground loop) except a 3-pronged power lead (so it should be properly grounded with the third prong). I’ve tried alot of devices to try and filter the power for the units - Surge Protection, an Isolation Transformer, a Power Conditioning UPS, a Furman Voltage Regulator/Power Conditioner and different combinations of the above. I’ve also tried switching multiboxes, power leads, extension leads, different outlets in my apartment, and trying it at a different house.

I am still trying to solve this thing!

If you manage to fix it with using 3-pronged leads or stopping other gear from creating a ground loop, good for you! But if that doesn’t solve your problem, hopefully we can figure out what’s happening eventually.

Sorry, I have no ideas about your other (value knob) problem.
