Concertmate MG-1: clicks on output

I pulled my MG-1 out of the basement and tried it after about 10 years, and I’m getting very annoying clicks when the output switches on and off (i.e. a key is pressed or the contour switches on). I’m looking for advice if this is normal, or if there is a problem.

One way to repeat the problem is to set all sliders to the bottom, set Auto Contour Trigger to IN, Modulation Rate to fast, Contour Tone Sources to Keyed. I get a loud clicking or buzzing sound (depending on the Modulation Rate). With Auto Contour Trigger set to OUT, this happens every time I press a key.

I would be grateful if someone could tell me if this is the normal behavior, or if something is wrong.

I opened up the MG1 and adjusted the VCA balance adjustment according to the service manual, since that seems to be the most likely source of DC pulses (which is what this sounds like) when the contour switches on and off, but that didn’t make a difference. Now I’m thinking maybe the contour generator is generating “too sharp” contours. However, I’d hate to spend a lot of time tracking this down only to discover that I forgot to set some switch and there’s no real problem. (As I said, it’s been 10 years, so I may be forgetting something obvious.)

Thank you,
Ken

In case anyone else encounters this problem, it turned out to be a bad CA3080 amplifier chip. I replaced it and all is well. If you want more details, I’ve written up a blog post: http://www.arcfn.com/2010/03/fixing-my-concertmate-mg-1-synth.html

that’s good to know. I have been trying to get my hands on one of these babies and think I have collected enough information about them to handle any situation I might encounter.

I think it has turned into an obsession.
